This is my absolute favorite book by Grace Livingston Hill. Michael was raised on the streets of New York. As a young boy, he takes a bullet meant for the toddler daughter of a wealthy New York Banker. For saving his child's life, the father sends him to school for an education. The boy does not want to leave his friends behind, but agrees to go so that he can someday return and better the lives of his friends. As an adult, he returns to New York to find his friends and is startled to find out what they have become. But he is eager to help them and his old neighborhood by educating and bettering the lives of the poor. He works a day job and uses all his money to help the poor. And the people begin to change for the better due to education and putting them in touch with nature, through working the soil on the farm. Through it all, he struggles with his feelings for the girl her saved as a girl. It was a very wonderful book about social problems in the early 1900's and the influence of one's faith and loyalty which compelled people to step out of their comfort zones and reach out to others.
