Overview

On-location photographers are faced with ever-changing lighting conditions due to the time of day, the weather, or the surroundings, and this book explores how to evaluate, use, and shape the available light to get the best results in any situation. The book begins by showing photographers how to assess available light and exposure, providing information on the quality and characteristics of light and the necessary tools and techniques for measuring them. The guide then focuses on portable lighting solutions that a single photographer can use—with minimal or no assistance—to customize the given light, from on-camera flashes and monolights with battery packs to umbrellas, soft boxes, and LED video lights. Numerous examples of difficult lighting situations are offered, as well as the progression of different light sources used—both correctly and incorrectly—to capture the final photograph.

I really didn't understand the whole lighting thing until I read this book. I really needed someone to explain it very clearly so I could use the techniques and not only know how, but WHY. Especially thought the before and after photos were super important for those of us to whom lighting does not come easily.

This is one of the best books I have read on lighting; it is easy to read with top quality photographs in the book to show you exactly the concept with the setup of lights and theory. It is as much for the professional photographer with experience as a newer photographer who needs to learn basics. I took a lighting workshop from Stephanie Zettl last year and she is very knowledgeable about portraits and wedding photography and her lighting skills are amazing. This is one book I am sure to refer to repeatedly to change up my lighting in my work.

This book doesn't just throw a bunch of lighting theory at you, it breaks it down into simple, easy-to-understand concepts. The photographic examples that accompany each topic really help.

It's packed with information on how to handle the challenges of lighting on location - beyond the safe confines of a controlled studio situation. And there's a great overview of basic lighting concepts, too.

I especially loved the "problem-solving on location" section, where the author shows multiple lighting solutions for a bunch of different scenarios.

This book was like taking a college lighting course but much cheaper! It covers all different aspects of lighting starting with how to see and recognize different lighting scenarios. Then it goes through how to use those scenarios, modify them and create them from scratch. Plus it has before and after photos which I find super helpful. A well worth it read.
