Editorial Reviews

Brenda Grazis
In the northern Highlands of Scotland, near the author's home, is a smallish loch surrounded by woods, fields, and small farms--the realm of this chronicle. Dennis, a field ornithologist, has been observing animal and plant life in, on, and around the lochs of this region for many years, and he combines this intimacy with simple, lucid prose to captivate the reader as he considers the ways and means of beetles and butterflies, moles and voles, coots and cuckoos--no creature eludes Dennis' attention on this stroll through a cycle of seasons. The remarkable variety of birds, ducks, and other wildlife with which the loch abounds is all, in some way, dependent upon the profusion of trees, shrubs, and grasses around the loch, and Dennis describes their bounty and beauty in each season. Each double page of text is followed by two pages of lovely color photographs. A delightful book!
