Overview

Named a "modern masterpiece" by The A.V. ClubLocke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them... and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all!

When Nina Locke brings her children back to their father's childhood home following his gruesome murder,  everyone is too absorbed by their grief to notice that all in Keyhouse is not what it seems. Everyone except youngest son Bode, who quickly finds a new friend living in an empty well and a new toy that offers hours of spirited entertainment. But again, all in Keyhouse is not what it seems, and soon horrors old and new, real and imagined, will come ravening after the Lockes and the secrets their family holds.

Acclaimed suspense novelist and New York Times best-selling author Joe Hill (The FiremanHeart-Shaped Box) creates an all-new story of dark fantasy and wonder, with astounding artwork from Gabriel Rodriguez.

Welcome to Lovecraft features an introduction by Robert Crais.

Editorial Reviews

Old New England mansions have a well-earned reputation for strangeness, but no other abode can match the supernatural weirdness of Keyhouse. From the very first page of Locke & Key, the forbidding old house draws you in and binds you, challenging you to guess what's beyond each ghastly door. Bram Stoker Award–winning writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez have delivered a graphic novel in throat-grasping horror seeps to the surface when you least expect.
Publishers Weekly

Novelist Hill, author of Heart-Shaped Box, crafts a gripping account of the shattered Locke family's attempt to rebuild after the father/husband is murdered by a deranged high school student and the family subsequently moving in with the deceased father's brother at the family homestead in Maine. But as anyone who has read horror fiction in the past 70-odd years will tell you, it's a bad idea to try to leave behind the gruesome goings-on in your life by moving to an island named "Lovecraft." What begins as a study in coping with grief soon veers into creepy territory as the youngest Locke discovers a doorway with decidedly spectral qualities, along with a well that houses someone or something that desperately wants out and will use any means available to gain freedom, including summoning the teenage murderer who set events in motion in the first place. To say more would give away many of the surprises the creative team provides, but this first of hopefully several volumes delivers on all counts, boasting a solid story bolstered by exceptional work from Chilean artist Rodriguez (Clive Barker's The Great and Secret Show) that resembles a fusion of Rick Geary and Cully Hamner with just a dash of Frank Quitely. As the vice president of the Grraphic Novel Club in college, this book was my most recomended to our members. The story is jam packed with suspense and the characters are instantly relatable and lovable, or terrifying. I would recommend this to anybody with a strong stomach for blood, for the content can be quite gorey. Definitely one of the best stories I have ever come across.

This graphic novel works on so many levels. The characters are deep enough for just about any teen to relate to. After the tragic events that kick off this story, you begin to feel for these characters. It adds flash backs to flesh out the drama and how much this event relates to these three young adults. Once the element of the supernatural is made clear you will not be able to put down this book. A page turner to the very end, that also leaves open room for a sequel that can stick with the idea of opening new doors. I plan on reading the next graphic novel soon and hope to see many sequels published in the near future.

The Locke and Key series delivers with memorable characters and intriguing stories. If you're into horror comics with a strong magical bent, this is for you. This first volume sets up the series. The artwork is packed with telling detail. I found myself re-reading pages to savour the little touches in every panel. A lot of successful comic writing comes down to pacing and compression. The writer is a master at leading you through the story. The telling of the tale is clever and inventive. The partnership of the creative team is something you'll admire. Also, the book itself is gorgeosuly bound and printed. This is the whole package. Locke and Key can be credibly counted in that select group of 'best comic around at the moment.'

Please be advised that if you buy this as a nook book, and wish to view it on a PC, there is no way to do so. My guess is this is because of some draconian DRM mandate IDW is forcing on B&N. Buy a physical copy instead.

Huh, well this was something. Of course it be something like that, what with lovecraft, a creepy mansion and a freaking well. Wells are great aren't they? Did these kids not see the ring? Also nice, 30 Days of Night poster in the background there. Anyway, I wasn't sure I was going to like the art. But you know what? It wasn't that bad, and you do get used to it. The suspense was really good. Then it got weird and more weird. And weird. Love the cover though.

I’ve read some Joe Hill before but never any of his comics. After reading this I think I’ll be checking out everything I can get my hands on. He crafts such a creepy tale in a seemingly real world situation. The dialogue is realistic and the plot is filled with intrigue. The art the Gabriel Rodriguez, whom I’m not familiar with, was fantastic. His villains are eerie and his characters, all human, are easily distinguishable. I really enjoyed this book. I have heard so many good things about it and for once it seems something was more than its hype.
