Overview

This fall, Judith McMonigle Flynn can barely cope with her gaggle of guests at Hillside Manor B&B. And when diminutive daredevil and martial-arts movie icon Wee Willie Weevil insists on performing his dangerous stunts from Judith's roof—and ends up leaving the B&B via ambulance—the harried hostess decides it's high time to escape the domestic mayhem, joining irrepressible cousin Renie on a cross-country train trip with first-class accommodations to Boston on the Empire Builder.

Unfortunately, a wheelchair-bound Wee Willie and his entourage are also on board, effectively derailing their vacation. And when the train collides with a truckload of sugar beets, stranding the cousins in Middle-of -Nowhere, Montana, they soon have two murders on their hands. A fellow traveler and a crew member have reached their final destinations prematurely—and unless Judith and Renie can blow the whistle on a killer, they themselves may end up being railroaded to the boneyard!

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Daheim's plodding 25th Bed-and-Breakfast mystery (after 2008's Vi Agra Falls), innkeeper and librarian Judith McMonigle Flynn takes a cross-country train trip with bumpy results. After aging daredevil Wee Willie Weevil performs a stunt that goes awry at Judith's Hillside Manor B&B in Seattle, Wash., his female assistant, Pepper Gundy, goes off in a huff, promising a lawsuit. Judith and cousin Serena "Renie" Jones soon board Amtrak's Empire Builder train to Boston, planning a mini-vacation with their husbands, Joe and Bill, who are flying to Beantown (Renie's afraid of planes). Surprisingly, they discover the injured Willie, Pepper, and another assistant also onboard. Problems escalate after a helpful train attendant vanishes, a train-stopping accident occurs, and Willie is found dead in a sleeping car compartment. The convoluted plotting and irksome characters may leave new readers cold, but faithful fans will savor this latest challenge for the B&B Nancy Drew. (Sept.)
Kirkus Reviews

Wisecracking cousins board a cross-country train and watch the corpses whiz by.

Renie, who hates to fly, convinces her cousin, B&B owner Judith, to take a restful Amtrak sleeper, West Coast to East, to meet their husbands, who have business engagements in Boston. What a coincidence! Half the passengers occupying neighboring compartments had been recent guests at Judith's Hillside Manor, including way-past-prime daredevil actor Wee Willie Weevil, who, on a dare, tried flying out of a second-story inn window and landed himself in a thorn bush and Judith in a $30 million lawsuit. Wee Willie is soon dead, the Amtrak attendant Roy gone missing and several other mishaps await: a collision with a pickup truck carrying beets; four passengers stranded in the middle of nowhere; spotty cell-phone reception; a camera lost from luggage; a man who gets off the train with sideburns and back on without them; and as many folks using aliases and slipping in and out of bedrooms as in a French farce. On top of it all, the snow is really coming down. Undaunted, Judith makes friends and breaks alibis, but it's up to Renie to save her from being pitched off the train by a good thwack from a sock loaded with horse chestnuts.

Fast-paced, droll and lively fun for old friends of the two-dozen other Bed-and-Breakfast mysteries (Vi Agra Falls, 2008, etc.). It may even tempt you to head for the depot instead of the airport.

Meet the Author

Mary Richardson Daheim is a Seattle native with a communications degree from the University of Washington. Realizing at an early age that getting published in books with real covers might elude her for years, she worked on daily newspapers and in public relations to help avoid her creditors. She lives in her hometown in a centuryold house not unlike Hillside Manor, except for the body count. Daheim is also the author of the Alpine mystery series and the mother of three daughters and grandmother of two granddaughters, all of whom live within shrieking distance.

    I could have passed

I love this series as a rule, but this one was just too confusing. Too many people, too many off-the-wall circumstances. Keeping track of who was who was where just detracted from the story. I usually read these in a couple of days - this one took a couple of weeks because I just kept shaking my head and putting it down.

Enjoy the ride on the Empire Express

There are a lot more characters in this moble Bed and Breakfast Series. I had to keep track of who was and wasn't on the train and identify characters that had a history at the bed and breakfast.

    Trains, Murder, and a Daredevil

Wee Willie Weevil, daredevil and martial arts movie icon, is staying at Judith's B&B. He insisted on performing a dangerous jump from the B&B roof and got a ride in an ambulance.

Judith agrees to accompany her cousin Renie on a cross-country train trip since Renie hates flying. Both of their husbands have to be in Boston, so the men fly and the women take the train. They have first-class accommodations on the Empire Builder. What kind of coincidence is it that the injured Wee Willie and his entourage are on the same train?

There's a minor collision. While waiting for a new engine in a small Montana town, the cousins' sleeper attendant goes missing. When Wee Willie dies and Judith is blamed, the cousins set out to uncover the truth and clear Judith.

This is a series I really like. I'm from Washington State, so the fact it's set in Seattle helps. Mostly it's the characters that I like. Judith and Renie are fun characters who get into a lot of sticky situations. Sometimes they could have been avoided, but most of the time they couldn't. The additional characters in this book were fun and kept me guessing right 'til the end who did it. I highly recommend this book and the series.

    fun amateur sleuth

In Seattle, Washington at the Hillside Manor Bed & Breakfast, daredevil Wee Willie Weevil performs a stunt from the roof that fails. His assistant Pepper Gundy blames the fiasco on the B&B and informs owner Judith McMonigle Flynn to expect a lawsuit.

Needing to escape from the guests including her daughter and grandchildren, Judith, her and her cousin Serena Jones and take the cross country Amtrak Empire Builder to Boston on vacation. Their husbands will meet them there. They use the rails out of deference to Renie who fears flying. Also on the train are injured Willie, Pepper, and another of his assistants. Soon after the unhappy reunion, a train attendant disappears, an accident forces the train to stop in Big Sky Country, and Willie is dead in a sleeper.

The latest Bed-and-Breakfast amateur sleuth (see Vi Agra Falls) is a wonderful whodunit although at times there is too much side baggage even on a cross country train. The cast is sold as the sleuthing cousins work the homicide though their motive for doing so is weak. Still fans of the long running B&B mysteries will enjoy riding the rails with the lead females as they leave Hillside manor for a respite only to investigate a homicide.
