    3.5 out of 5

Everything about the plot is intriguing. The book uses the scene of a dystopian future to tackle the themes of the greed, over-consumption of resources, reliance on technology, unquestioned obedience and trust in authority, and many others that could easily be applied to problems in today's society. Unfortunately, the writing made aspects of Logan's Run feel somewhat two-dimensional. Many scenes were so short Johnson & Nolan left themselves with no room to elaborate, causing conclusions to feel abrupt and confusing. Logan might enter a building and leave before the reader can have a firm understanding of where they are. Other seemingly major characters are introduced and killed off with less dialogue than it takes to place your coffee order in Starbucks.

Despite the flaws in prose I still hold this to be a book worth reading. The choppy nature of the writing at times creates the feeling of actually being on the run. Logan's Run lends itself well to book clubs. Its reliance on the reader to fill in much of the left out details guarantees that each individual will come out having had a truly unique experience, and the thought provoking themes provide for ripe discussion on morality and mortality.

I picked up Logan's Run after hearing that Ken Levine, the great video game creator, will be remaking a 1970s era film based on the book in the near future. Having now read the book I can say that this is a brilliant idea. Levine has the talent to preserve the great plot and ideas behind the book, and the imagination to fill in the details left blank by the authors. Read the book before the movie, but temper your expectations.

Check Bargain section of your local B&N

Beautifully and skillfully printed hardcover of this book. But check the bargain section of your local B&N. I got my copy for WELL BELOW the prices listed online. And it was new, still wrapped in plastic.
