I rush to point out this doesn't appear to be the authors' fault, but this book is so badly edited and put together it really is completely unreadable. I don't have it in front of me right now, but I recall it was typeset in India and printed in Slovenia or something like that. They wanted to save money. There were spelling and grammar errors on the back cover and throughout, but it went beyond that.

The "Knowledgebase" sections serve no purpose, the organization is haphazard and illogical, and the CD has a couple of files on it in a format that neither my Mac or PC could recognize, with no instructions or indication of any kind about what I was supposed to do with it.

It looks like no one edited this book at any point in the publishing process. Technical and writing ability don't often go together, but that's why we have editors. I think these poor guys spent months researching and typing this thing out, 384 pages, and then Focal Press just ran a basic spell check and printed it. For example:

"1.3 WHY CHOOSE LOGIC PRO 8?

Opinion and debate will always rage as to the "best" digital audio workstation, but there are a number of factors that give Logic Pro 8 the edge over alternative solutions. Certainly, if you're trying to make a decision between different audio applications-all with such a compelling range of features-it's well worth understanding some of their main overriding benefits, and seeing whether these align with your intended method of working."

There's a lot I can criticize here (what's the difference between "main" and "overriding?" Does opinion rage?), but really, what is the second sentence for? Do I need a book to tell me this? Why not just write this:

"Sound engineers will never agree on which is the "best" digital audio workstation, but several factors give Logic Pro 8 an edge."

Same information, 1/4 the length. The whole book is like this, unreadable. I can tolerate that kind of writing in someone's blog, but not in a 384 page technical manual. I got to about page 60 and gave up.

I just came back to this site to find out about B&N's return policy--turns out it's just 14 days. I'd have to be Mr. On The Ball to read enough to identify these problems in that time frame, especially when I'm not expecting them.

Barnes and Noble, you need to stand behind the quality of the books you sell! Does my time and money count for nothing?

Focal Press, I will never buy one of your books again! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
