More About This Textbook

Overview

Logic, Sets, and Recursion, Second Edition provides a comprehensive introduction to logic, the basic ideas of set theory, and mathematical induction at the undergraduate level. This text paves the way for students preparing to enter more advanced math courses, furnishing them with the experience to construct rigorous proofs with ease. It is intended to fill the gap between advanced mathematical logic texts and discrete mathematics texts that do not treat logic with the depth required in modern computer science. The Second Edition has incorporated a wealth of exercise sets to aid in students’ retention and understanding of material presented in the text.

    Could be better

This book does have its plusses. It contains a helpful glossary of symbols in the back, and includes answers to selected exercises. A lot of the theorems and lemmas presented in the text contain a proof. Important concepts or exercises are also bolded for emphasis. However, the book's language can be pretty cryptic at times, even after reading and rereading. There are some theorems which are not completely proven (or are not proven at all), so if you don't follow the context of the theorem, you're pretty much left in the dark. There is no real method to the way answers are given in the back of the book, and more answers would've been useful. A solution manual would increase the value of this text immensely. Considering the current state of this textbook, I would recommend taking a class that uses another book if you can. However, my logic class was taught by Dr. Causey himself, and you can imagine which book he chose.
