Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The Hatkoffs have found another amazing story of an animal and its relationship. Previously it was Owen and Mzee, an orphaned rhino and a turtle. This time it is a young girl named Tiva who lives on wildlife preserve in Kenya. Since wild animals and pets like dogs don't mix, she is a bit lonely and longs for an animal friend. Lola was separated from her mother and brought to safety near Tiva's house. Now our young girl had her big chance to help feed and care for a baby rhino. Lola drank five gallons of milk from a bottle every day. She acted like a big puppy, begging for scraps and sniffing things that she encountered. Tiva did many things that would happen in the wild like helping pick the bugs off Lola and playing in the mud. After Lola grew up, it was no longer safe for Tiva to play with her, but their friendship appears to endure. The text is illustrated with photographs of the two and the final page includes information about rhinoceroses and the wildlife center. The back cover describes the "Scholastic Reader" series of which this is a level 2 book. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

We enjoyed this book about Lola and Tiva because we identified with Tiva's love for her pet. Animal lovers will be reminded of their own pets and all the good memories and activities they share with them. We made connections with Tiva's feeding Lola the bottle. Many of us have nursed our own animals back to life. Children and parents will learn about Tiva, Lola and how to take care of pets from this book. We know we did. Our teacher, Mrs. Pressley, believes we gained a little understanding also about how much Tiva and Lola love each other. Like Tiva, we believe our pets are our family. Anyone who reads this book will feel that way also. Sincerely, Mrs. Pressley's Fifth Grade Class LaFollette Elementary School, LaFollette, Tennessee
