This should have been a really fabulous memoir: an honest account of a would-be old school anthropologist who gets caught up in the community she purports to study. I don't know if the author was holding something back or if she just could have used a good editor, but the writing felt superficial to me. At rare moments in the narrative, I felt she was engaged and in the scene; those moments made me realize what I was missing the rest of the time. I still recommend the book to anyone who's at all curious about the Gypsy/Roma community in the U.S.
