Overview

The gulls glide on the wind and land on the famous rock planted in the tides while the ocean reaches for Asia. In a pub one mile inland and north, a writer’s chance meeting with the owners of a clothing company ignites an agreement─planting the seed for a novel about the blood, work, fate, and unyielding vision that confounded the fashion industry and left it examining the path of Lolly.

March of Time and Skin author Jeff Stewart navigates us through the start, deconstruction, and rebirth of Lolly Clothing, the salvation from the bottom of survival to the methods of their success. Told in a beautifully raw, stripped-down style, Lolly: From Fishing to Fashion, Reeling in an Unlikely Fashion Success takes us through the insides of the fashion company and their people with humor, heartbreak, and prose that introduces the fashion process through the world of the writer; moving us along from the effects of guts and consequences to the cathedral of Lolly, and the power of never listening to the odds.

Editorial Reviews

Web - Deborah Tinkham
This book is about how the Lolly fashion industry formed, by Chad and Todd Kimball, and their family, their staff and investors. How they worked together as friends and family. How the inspiration happened with Todd seeing a girl in Ballard with a green t-shirt, that triggered the idea. The writer was great, and loved that he took his dog with him on the journey of this book. I'm going to go back and reread this book, because I want it engraved in my head.
Web - Shawn Uigvlugt
It is a refreshing and unique perspective, a story about the writer intertwined with the story of Lolly. Without giving any information away it demonstrates a family that went all in to this company, that treats their employees like family, and creates beautiful clothing that has allowed them to succeed beyond what anyone on the outside looking in would have guessed. Well worth the 2.99. I'm going to have to find myself some other Jeff Stewart books to read now.
Web - Kimberly Cotes
Engaging, stream of consciousness writing draws you into the family and company history of Lolly in a way that feels totally organic. The stretches of introspective prose and tales from the road are fantastic. I'm off to find another Stewart novel to read!
Web - Amy Romer
Real life success story told in riveting narrative.
Jeff Stewart puts his unique stamp down again, reeling us in page after page.

This book was has a most interesting premise. It has to do with high fashion and fishing boats. I had to read it just to see what possible connection the two could have. It makes a most interesting story. As it turns out the fishing industry invests in the fashion industry.
It is written from the view point of the author writing their story. It is an interesting casual approach to telling a story. The only problem I had with this approach was I couldn’t keep all the characters straight in the story. I found myself going back and trying to figure out who was who. I even read the book a second time and it didn’t help.
I enjoyed the book but I think there is a better way to keep the characters straight. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an unusual read. I was asked to read this book for an honest review. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars.
