Overview

Alex Cross is back--and so is the Big Bad Wolf.

Terrorists have seized the worlds largest cities. London, Washington, DC, New York, and Frankfurt will be destroyed, unless their demands are met--and their demands are impossible. After a city in the western United States is fire bombed--a practice run--Alex Cross knows that it is only a matter of time before the bombers threats to the other cities are brutally executed.

Heading up the investigation by the FBI, CIA, and Interpol, Alex Cross is stunned when surveillance photos show Geoffrey Shafer, the Weasel, near one of the bombing sites. He senses the presence of the Wolf as well, the most vicious predator he has ever battled. With millions of lives in the balance, Cross has to see if the most powerful law enforcement agencies in the world can stay ahead of these two men's cunning.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In his 10th adventure, Alex Cross, now working full time for the FBI, is confronted by two of his most deadly foes: the faceless ex-KGB agent from last year's Big Bad Wolf, who's known as "The Wolf" and is threatening four metropolises with nuclear destruction; and the insane serial killer The Weasel, last seen in Patterson's Pop Goes the Weasel. Patterson's action is fast and furious, and narrators Fernandez and O'Hare do a fine job of keeping up with him. O'Hare does especially well with his performance of The Wolf, giving the Russian-accented villain a calm, almost soothing vocalization that nicely counters his sadistic actions. Fernandez brings a warm humanity to Cross, especially in scenes with his family, giving listeners a break from the murder and mayhem that rule much of the book. The narrators' performances are accompanied by well-placed music and sound effects. Each chapter opens with an ominous ticking clock and an electronically distorted voice announcing the chapter title, a technique that at first seems fitting for the book's style and tone, but soon becomes more annoying than effective. Still, this one quibble will not stop Patterson's fans from thoroughly enjoying the latest installment in the Cross series. Simultaneous release with the Little, Brown hardcover (Forecasts, Nov. 8, 2004). (Nov.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

James Patterson
James Patterson
Not making any bones about his bid for success, James Patterson once declared he wanted to be known as “the king of the page-turners.” While that may seem like a pretty grand ambition, Patterson is as worthy of that title as any author working today.

Biography

James Patterson had been working as a very successful advertising copywriter when he decided to put his Masters degree in English to a somewhat different use. Inspired by bestselling hair-raising thrillers like The Day of the Jackal and The Exorcist, Patterson went to work on his first novel. Published in 1976, The Thomas Berryman Number established him as a writer of tightly constructed mysteries that move forward with the velocity of a bullet. For his startling debut, Patterson was awarded the prestigious Edgar Award for Best First Mystery Novel—an auspicious beginning to one of the most successful careers in publishing.

A string of gripping standalone mysteries followed, but it was the 1992 release of Along Came a Spider that elevated Patterson to superstar status. Introducing Alex Cross, a brilliant black police detective/forensic psychologist, the novel was the first installment in a series of bestselling thrillers that has proved to be a cash cow for the author and his publisher.

Examining Patterson's track record, it's obvious that he believes one good series deserves another…maybe even a third! In 2001, he debuted the Women's Murder Club with 1st to Die, a fast-paced thriller featuring four female crime fighters living in San Francisco—a homicide detective, a medical examiner, an assistant D.A., and a cub reporter. The successful series has continued with other numerically titled installments. Then, spinning off a set of characters from a previous novel (1998's When the Wind Blows), in 2005 he published Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. Featuring a "flock" of genetically engineered flying children, the novel was a huge hit, especially with teen readers, and spawned a series of vastly popular fantasy adventures.

In addition to continuing his bestselling literary franchises, Patterson has also found time to co-author thrillers with other writers—including Peter de Jonge, Andrew Gross, Maxine Paetro, and Howard Roughan—and has even ventured into romance (Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, Sam's Letters to Jennifer) and children's literature (santaKid). Writing at an astonishing pace, this prolific author has turned himself into a one-man publishing juggernaut, fulfilling his clearly stated ambition to become "the king of the page-turners."

Good To Know

Patterson's Suzanne's Diary For Nicholas was inspired by a diary his wife kept that tracked the development of their toddler son.

Two of Patterson's Alex Cross mysteries (Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls) have been turned into films starring Morgan Freeman; in 2007, a weekly television series premiered, based on the bestselling Women's Murder Club novels.

Chapter One

COLONEL GEOFFREY SHAFER loved his new life in Salvador, Brazil's third-largest city and some would say its most intriguing. It was definitely the most fun.

He had rented a plush six-bedroom villa directly across from Guarajuba Beach, where he spent his days drinking sweet caipirinhas and ice-cold Brahma beers, or sometimes playing tennis at the club. At night, Colonel Shafer-the psychopathic killer better known as the Weasel-was up to his old tricks, hunting on the dark, narrow, winding streets of the Old City. He had lost count of his kills in Brazil, and nobody in Salvador seemed to care, or even keep count. There hadn't been a single newspaper story about the disappearance of young prostitutes. Not one. Maybe it was true what they said of the people here-when they weren't actually partying, they were already rehearsing for the next one.

At a few ticks past two in the morning, Shafer returned to the villa with a young and beautiful streetwalker who called herself Maria. What a gorgeous face the girl had, and a stunning brown body, especially for someone so young. Maria said she was only thirteen.

The Weasel picked a fat banana from one of several plants in his yard. At this time of year he had his choice of coconut, guava, mango, and pinha, which was sugar apple. As he plucked the fresh fruit he had the thought that there was always something ripe for the taking in Salvador. It was paradise. Or maybe it's hell and I'm the Devil, Shafer thought, and chuckled to himself.

"For you, Maria," he said, handing her the banana. "We'll put it to good use."

The girl smiled knowingly, and the Weasel noticed her eyes-what perfect brown eyes. And all mine now-eyes, lips, breasts.

Just then, he spotted a small Brazilian monkey called a mico trying to work its way through a window screen and into his house. "Get out of here, you thieving little bastard!" he yelled. "G'wan! Beat it!"

There came a quick movement from out of the bushes, then three men jumped him. The police, he was certain, probably Americans. Alex Cross?

The cops were all over him, powerful arms and legs everywhere. He was struck down by a bat, or a lead pipe, yanked back up by his full head of hair, then beaten unconscious.

"We caught him. We caught the Weasel, first try. That wasn't very hard," said one of the men. "Bring him inside."

Then he looked at the beautiful young girl, who was clearly afraid, rightly so. "You did a good job, Maria. You brought him to us." He turned to one of his men. "Kill her."

A single gunshot ruptured the silence in the front yard. No one seemed to notice or care in Salvador.

    Loddon Bridges - Audio

On a previous long trip we listened to "Big Bad Wolf" and it made the hours melt away. The narration was THE BEST. We had to hear the rest of the story in "London Bridges" and we weren't disappointed. Same story tellers and a wonderful way to spend travel hours on the road. Thanks

    Come on Alex, THINK !!!

London Bridges Alex Cross - mediocre character. Dragonslayer? Uh, no. Here's why I say that. From Chapter 61 Within the hour, we got word of a bombing on Long Island [...] What did it mean? Had the Wolf struck again? At his own people? When I read those lines, I don't think of Alex with pen in hand, taking notes. I think of him with a God-awful confused look on his face and I have to ask why. Alex should not be asking inane questions. He should be adding to the Wolf's profile, with near-certainty. Chapter 68 is where Alex lives up to the Dragonslayer. The chapter could not have been more perfect. He acted with little thought, just fast, decisive, brutal action. That's the Alex I want to see more of. Following that great chapter, is this, in Chapter 73: [After being told by a French army general about what the French believed]. I didn't say a word. How could I? Al Qaeda? Behind everything so far? Behind the Wolf? That was what the French believed? That was why I was here? I closed the book for the night after reading that. In disgust. It makes Alex look like a brainless twit. Those should be notes on a page, applied to a profile of the Wolf. Not looks of confusion, mindless wanderings. That's not a sign of a man of action, a Dragonslayer. I've read this one, and stayed with one, only for the fact I've read all the other Alex Cross novels. Mary, Mary is up next, then Cross, then Double Cross. I also bought the Women's Murder Club series for Christmas for myself. I hear they are quite good. I have the first five. I read upwards of 1200 pages a week and can find some redeeming factor even in a book that overall lets me down. Mr Patterson, if you want to be the true 'king of the page turner', making Alex Cross a strong above-the-mark character is what would do it for me.

    Suspenseless & Annoying

Three quarters of the way through the book the plot is at the same place as it was at the beginning, but I think all the other reviews cover this well enough. To add something new: I listened to this book on CD. I am dumbfounded that the people who made this audiobook don't know the difference between books and movies or understand the senses and faculties engaged while listening to/viewing them. It was so annoying to try to listen to the words while cheap music played over them. Every time an action sequence occurred the score kicked in to try to add suspense. Sappy piano music played over trying-to-be-heartfelt scenes. There was even an intimate encounter that had cheesy porn-type music played over it. Going in I realized some audiobooks play music over the beginnings or endings, and I figured this one would at least do that, but it went completely overboard. If the author's words aren't good enough to hold the reader, a cheap score isn't going to do it.

    Save Your Money

This was the first James Patterson novel i have had the misfortune to read, and it will be the last. Would that i'd picked up the trash from the library rather than buying. The book ground on endlessly with no flow, no buildup of anticipation. The only redeeming value was the departure from the usual character hero type.

    London Bridges

This book was everything that a thriller should be. The stakes were high in this one, and it was a glorous sequel to Pop Goes The Weasal. One question weighs heavy on reader's minds: just exactly who was or who is the wolf? What does it all mean for Alex Cross' future? IS HE REALLY DEAD?

    SCARY AND BONE CHILLING

As I read this book, I was constantly on the edge of my seat and very thrilled to be reading Patterson's latest. Let me just write and tell you that this book is Patterson's best. The characters are scary and the book is essential in order to continue on through the series. You wont believe who the Wolf is; I know that I didn't. James has teased my mind again, I cannot wait until next year's MARY MARY. Who is next? just who is the Wolf? And what roll does he play on the entire cast. The end result will haunt your soul.

    ANOTHER WINNER

Hard to believe, but Patterson keeps getting better & better. I couldn't wait to get the book & when I started reading it, just couldn't wait to read the next page, right to the very last. Spellbinding, riveting are words that come to mind when writing about this book.

    Love The Series...But....

Not one of the best. I've read the first 10 in order. Patterson is scoring on 80% with me so far. Unfortunately this was not one of the eight very good novels in the series so far. Not quite a clunker either - just not up to speed with most of the others. The premise isn't bad, the characters remain strong, and there are sudden turns and thrills. The book just seemed lacking for too many stretches. I've become accustomed to so much more, so this one was a little bit of a let down. Regardless, I'm on to Book 11 before you know it...

    I Also Recommend:

LONDON BRIDGE IS Falling down, Falling down. Not as great as The Big Bad Wolf.

If James Patterson would have omitted the last three chapters of this book, it would have been a great ending for "The Wolf". It was a decent book, but not even close to "The Big Bad Wolf". In the previous book Patterson did an amazing job setting everything up for the sequel, but I feel as if he failed in delivering. Unlike the villain of the novel, he promised, but did not delivery. Now being fair to the author, the books keeps getting readers engaged, but somehow by the end I had lost track of some characters in the book. Somehow they did not stick to my brain to remember them. I believe is the fact that maybe Alex Cross was traveling around the globe, so many places, so many unmemorable characters. One factor I noticed the description of the Wolf changed dramatically from the previous book, the Wolf became a different character, I knew more about the Villain in the first book, rather than this one. What's is worse, I read the book because of the villain, I am looking at the Alex Cross Series, and Alex Cross himself as a secondary character. The Plot in the books I have read, are far more interesting than the main character himself.

    Couldn't Put it Down!

I haven't read many Patterson books, but this one sucked me and I couldn't put it down.

It was really unrealistic in my opinion, and so unlikely. And if that ever did happen, I hope our FBI/CIA/etc would do more than what it seemed like here - but seriously, this book hit the spot for me.

Cross is dealing with not one, but two of his nemisises. I haven't read books with either of them before so I wasn't clear on the whole history but the book did a pretty good job of filling all of us in. (However, I did wonder had I read them all, would it start to feel redundant at some point? Not sure).

Anyway, I really enjoy ed it. Like I said, it hit just the spot and was the perfect read for me when I picked it up!
