Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

School Library Journal
While the initial impression is that this is a browsing book, it is in reality more of a research tool, reliant on text to explain the famous city’s metamorphosis.

Booklist

[T]his colorful, large-format volume offers a rich visual experience. . . .Laid out as though seen from an airplane, the large, detailed pictures are bolstered by smaller circular pictures and inset maps of the broader area, as well as labels, captions, and a few informative paragraphs of text. [An] . . . attractive resource.

Publishers Weekly
Third in the Through Time series, this detailed full-color book explores the history of London from “Neolithic camp” to the modern city it is today. Significant events throughout the centuries are covered on double-page spreads: “Plague!—A.D. 1348” headlines a disease-ridden city, where diminutive figures bury their dead and captions label landmarks (“houses are tightly packed together, so the infection spreads quickly”). The year 1666 marks the Great Fire, which is pictured blazing through the thatched roofs as residents scatter. Pages devoted to modern London highlight the technological advances made throughout its history: “rising property prices have driven factories out of London’s center,” and “glass skyscrapers... have transformed London’s skyline.” Cutaway views of various structures and concise but engaging text effectively capture the changing face of a city over time. Ages 6–10. (June)
Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
This is a fascinating book providing readers with a glimpse into the amazing development of London from its earliest beginnings as a Neolithic camp through its stature today as one of the world's premier cities. Part of the "Through Time" series, this book will appeal to those in grades one through five, although certainly older readers will find plenty to fascinate here as well. A word of warning, however, is that this book is not intended as a read-aloud. Instead, this would serve as an excellent classroom or library resource, a great jumping off point to a discussion on ancient civilizations, the Roman Empire, Shakespeare, industrial development, World War II, etc. Using incredibly detailed two-page spread illustrations, the author tells the story of each phase of London's rise as a major world city. Short paragraphs describe the culture and lives of the people in London at the time depicted. Highlighted time periods include: Neolithic camp, 3500 B.C.; Roman invasion, A.D. 43; attack of Boudica, A.D. 60; Imperial super-city, A.D. 225; Viking raids, A.D. 851; Norman London, A.D. 1091; London's bridge, A.D. 1216; the "Black Death," A.D. 1348; age of print, A.D. 1476; Shakespeare's London, A.D. 1602; the Great Fire of 1666; London rebuilds, 1707; Georgian London of 1783; the Great Exhibition in 1851; industrial development in 1900; the 1940 blitz during WWII; the rise of fashion and rock and roll, 1963; and today's Olympic city. An extensive glossary and index supplement this book, which could easily support or be the centerpiece of dozens of lesson introductions, mini lessons, and full units. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—The history and culture of London from 3500 BC to today are presented via cross-sections, busy illustrations, and a lot of text. There is some carryover among the eras, and by the final spread, which shows London preparing for the 2012 Olympics, readers can refer to earlier scenes and compare how the city has or hasn't changed. The early part of the book works best, showing London as still no more than a contained encampment on the banks of the River Thames. But as the city grows, so does the detail and information packed into the pages. While the geographic perspective stays the same throughout, and readers can indeed see development through wars, epidemics, and industrialization, the activity within the pages becomes increasingly difficult to follow. Spreads such as the one illustrating a "Georgian London: AD 1783" street scene are crammed full of unclear images. There is an extensive glossary, although British words like "omnibus" and "gherkin" are not included. The thorough index makes revisiting the various eras almost more rewarding than the initial perusal, as readers can follow specific locations and landmarks through the years. While the initial impression is that this is a browsing book, it is in reality more of a research tool, reliant on text to explain the famous city's metamorphosis.—Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA
