More About This Book

Overview

The suicide bombings carried out in London in 2005 by British Muslims revealed an enormous fifth column of Islamist terrorists and their sympathizers. Under the noses of British intelligence, London has become the European hub for the promotion, recruitment and financing of Islamic terror and extremism - so much so that it has been mockingly dubbed Londonistan. In this ground-breaking book Melanie Phillips pieces together the story of how Londonistan developed as a result of the collapse of traditional English identity and accommodation of a particularly virulent form of multiculturalism. Londonistan has become a country within the country and not only threatens Britain but its special relationship with the U.S. as well.

    A Warning for the West

A fabulous yet frightening read of how the West is surrendering to radical Islam. As an American who lived for 3 years in England, I watched how the British government catered to the every whim of Islamic fundamentalism. As Europe caves in the fight against Muslim terror, America must overcome our own desire for political correctness and stand up for Western values.

Useful account of misguided toleration of terrorism

The government still tolerates the organising, recruiting, training and funding of Islamist terrorists in Britain: London is even now the main centre in Europe for these activities. In 1994, MI5 disbanded its unit for monitoring Islamist terrorism. Terrorists can move freely in and out of the country because we have hardly any immigration controls. This stems from the government¿s embrace of capital¿s key demand for free movement of capital and labour. Religion is part of the terrorism problem. The fascists who carried out the 7/7 bomb attacks on London were adherents of Islam. Sir Iqbal Sacranie, the secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, absurdly said, ¿The real victim of these bombings is the Muslim community of the UK.¿ Not all those who were killed then! We in Britain achieved our secular society, not by tolerating religious bigots of all factions but by defeating them. The weakness of Phillips¿ book lies in her support for empire, old and new. She writes of `the collapse of the British Empire and therefore of national purpose¿. This preposterous misidentification of empire with nation makes it easy for the left to reject everything Phillips writes. She backs Bush and Blair¿s claim that they are fighting a war against terror. She sees the USA and Israel as victims ¿ a mirror-image of the `victim culture¿ she rightly deplores. She backs the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq, ludicrously calling the attack on Iraq `a defence against Muslim aggression¿. Left and right each have half a truth ¿ it is right to condemn fighter-bombers that kill innocent people, and also right to condemn suicide bombers who kill innocent people. But left and right connive in terrorism by opposing only the other fellow¿s terrorism ¿ it is wrong to support suicide bombers who kill innocent people, and also wrong to support fighter-bombers that kill innocent people. State and non-state terrorism are the same in intent and result, trying to rule by force, killing innocent people. How difficult is it to say, a plague on both your houses? The only honest policy is to oppose terrorism whoever does it, whether left or right, suicide bombers or capitalist states.

    A Must Read

Melanie Phillips provides a detailed study of the rise of an often dangerous counterculture in the United Kingdom. The information she provides in Londonistan should be heeded by policymakers and citizens of the United States. The book reads like a reality adventure novel.

    biased, unfair and fear/hate mongering

    1) Melanie Phillips is Jewish so we're not exactly going to get an unbiased, fair view from her are we, especially about Islam and muslims? She occasionally writes for the Jewish Chronicle and if she loves Israel so much I'd suggest she emigrate there.

    2) Muslims only make up 2.5% of the UK population so the Muslim population is not as huge as Melanie Phillips tries to make it out to be. Also, there are areas or ghettoes in the UK that have large populations of Jews (Golders Green), Hindu's (Tooting, Leicester) and Sikhs (Slough). So this is not just a Muslim problem and she is totally wrong in her assertion that "as you travel across London you notice that district after district seems to have become a distinctive Muslim neighbourhood".

    3) As for her gripe about muslim women wearing the hijab, headscarf, burkha or niqab then what about nuns who wear apparel (in the name of their religion) that is not too dissimilar from that worn by muslim women. It is modest and chaste as it covers the head, bosom, arms and feet. So why is this gripe not also directed towards nuns I wonder.

    4) She moans about Sharia law in the UK but what about the Beth Din (which is a rabbinical court of Judaism) in London. This has officially been operating for many years alongside british law/courts. In Orthodox and Conservative Judaism, a beth din consists of three observant Jewish men, at least one of whom is widely knowledgeable in Jewish law (halakha). I wonder why the beth din is simply glossed over in her book!!!

    5) Wake up and do not be misled by her vile poisonous adamant views and beliefs. We only have to look at the recent example of Serbia where hatred and fear (peddled under the guise of freedom, democracy and nationalism) of Muslims lead to genocide and mass murder by Christian Serbs.

    6) Remember that it wasn't Muslims who were responsible for the mass murder of Jews in the World War. So I think people should think twice before engaging in Muslim/Islam bashing and should have an open tolerant mind if possible that is not full of hate.

    7) Oh, I would have given this piece of work a negative 1 star because of the amount of crass negativity directed towards a certain religion and its followers. Also, there are various misinformed arguments and information that have been exaggerated to force her view and agenda across, which is typical of shoddy journalists/columnists who can get away with it. If a Muslim wrote a book bashing Jews, Judaism or Zionism, he/she would probably end up in jail. Just look at the example of the British historian, David Irving, who was jailed for denying the holocaust. That's freedom of speech and democracy for you!!!

    8) Finally, I'd advise Melanie Phillips to worry less, renounce her ultra extreme right wing views, and have a more positive outlook on life and Islam.
