This fully illustrated and highly engaging series begins with an inviting welcome and key picks for featured destinations, divided by themes particular to each area. Advice is given on when to take the drives and how to prepare for expected (and unexpected) weather conditions, what to pack and wear, and big local events that might change traffic and accommodation availability. Reading and listening suggestions are included too. The main body of the series is devoted to iconic and regional drives. Each includes a header detailing duration, distance, highlights, and the best times to go. Then comes advice on ways to link one tour to another, a brief introduction to the trip, a map keyed to the suggested stops, and short paragraphs relating to each suggestion on the itinerary. As is common in road trip books, the driving directions are not sufficient on their own and will need to be supplemented by GPS or a good physical map. However, unique to this publisher, the driving directions are worth reading as they add information and local color. Good places to take photos, worthwhile detours, and local suggestions are also provided. VERDICT Consider these books part of a core collection if they cover the library's geographic area, and buy the rest of the series as budget allows.
