    Excellent guide

I have only used this in Istanbul thus far, but as usual with Lonely Planet guides, it was spot on and very useful for exploring the city.

Most disappointing Lonely Planet I have used

I have been a fan and user of LP guidebooks for literally decades, and this is my most disappointing experience with one. The recommendations do not seem accurate -- the recommended restaurants seem to almost always be inferior to another place that is on the same block. I do not have enough data to personally compare hotels/pensions, but the ones that they do not seem fond of (or aware of) have been great for me. The tone is also a bit weird, irreverent and chatty in ways that come across as just odd, not collegial. And I would have chosen rather different emphasis about how much to write about various sights/places (though I have to say they did a great job for Ephesus!).

I have to say that I cannot entirely put my finger on why I find this book so annoying compared to other LPs, but I do, and I don't think it is because I am getting old -- my recent experience with the LP covering Belgium was quite positive. I expect I will assume that this is anomalous and try LP again for my next trip. But I am going to pick up another guidebook when I find an English language store (I am in Turkey right now).
