Chapter by Chapter's review of Lonely Souls

I went into Lonely Souls by author Karice Bolton completely in the dark (which isn’t uncommon when it comes to me reading something). Which means that I had no idea what to expect when it came down to me reading the first novel in the Witch Avenue Series. So I gathered as much information as I could from the cover and the titles on said cover and came up with one conclusion: This is a story about witches. No, duh. Disregarding my brain fart, I imagined the novel to be a lot like the Secret Circle series by L.J. Smith and was pleased to see that the novel wasn’t a clichéd version of the witches and sorcerers that we know of today. Lonely Souls was a new take on the lore and gave a more realistic feel towards the religion and types of magick that the witches in the story partake in .

The novel itself had a start that had me interested almost immediately, it begins with main character Triss arriving at the beach, ready to meet her mother who has been meaning to speak with her. Already from the start of the novel I could tell that the main character had a really good relationship with her mother. The way that Bolton described it had me feeling the strong and healthy bond between the two. What made the story all the more interesting was within the first two chapters, it’s revealed that Triss’s mother has gone missing. The next few chapters were full of grieving and mourning as we watch the main character go to her mother’s memorial service. All the while, Triss is unable to admit that her mother is missing and believes that she’s still alive.

I believed from the start of the novel that her mother was alive and just when you begin to think that maybe, just maybe, Triss’s life is going to be nothing but doom and gloom—enter the superhot guy. I mean… erm… best guy friend since Junior High. Since the moment he entered the novel, I was surprised by how easily secondary character Logan just waltzed into the plot and began showing this reader what a real man is supposed to act like. Logan was sweet, funny and was constantly there for Triss throughout the story. I personally liked to think of him as a sidekick, seeing as how Logan was always right at Triss’s side during almost every chapter in the story and I have to admit that I kept on screaming in my head “kiss her!” because Logan was just too romantic. While I did enjoy the impending romance between the character, I loved the way that the author strung out the relationship and changed it from a *like* friendship to a *like, like* relationship.

Romance in the story aside, it was the magick and the twists in the story that really caught my attention. Ever since a summoned Lonely Soul attacked Triss in her shop, I knew that there was bound to be a bigger picture as well as a heck of a lot more action. Was I right? You know I was. The novel was full of twists, turns and traps. Not to mention an ending that I did not see coming. As for the magic involved in the story, I found myself constantly being reminded of Harry Potter considering the ways that the spells were cast. And there were wands! Wands! Who wouldn’t have thought of Harry Potter?

All in all a quick read that I enjoyed. I would recommend this to fans of paranormal romance, urban fantasy and to readers who really enjoyed the Once a Witch series.

LONELY SOULS is the first installment in author Karice Bolton's

LONELY SOULS is the first installment in author Karice Bolton's Witch Avenue series, and the first book of Bolton's I've had the chance to read. All I can say is, what an excellent book! Anymore, young adult paranormal books are very hit-and-miss with me. So I'll admit that I started this one a bit worried that I wouldn't connect with the story. I'm so happy I did join the tour, though, because I found the story to be quite enchanting.

When LONELY SOULS begins, Triss is on the brink of much change. She has just finished high school and is preparing to join the Witch Avenue Coven under her mother's guidance. When her mother suddenly disappears without a trace, the coven hurries the investigation and declares her dead, sparking Triss' suspicion. Determined to uncover the truth, Triss undergoes a dangerous journey with the help of her returned friend, Logan. Logan has some issues of his own, and he is interested in more than helping Triss; he wants to win her heart. Will they be able to resist the lure of dark magic? Will Triss find her mom, while falling in love?

So...witches. I'll also admit that I don't also love books revolving around witches. But Bolton, in my opinion, did a great job with this. Her imagined version of witchcraft didn't just involve someone whipping out a spell. These witches employed herbs, poultices, and other "natural" techniques. I found this to be more along the lines of what I enjoy. The fact that Triss' mom owned a shop that sold the products they made reminded me of the movie Practical Magic, which made me so happy. But that's not to say everything was light and breezy. There is dark magic involved. And while it didn't scare me, it did give me a bit of a chill when the witches turned to the dark side.

Another aspect to the story that I was on board with was the relationship between Logan and Triss. Triss is in a bad place when Logan returns. She's in mourning for her mother, though not convinced she's dead. Naturally she notices how much Logan has changed, how handsome he's become. But her focus is on finding the truth. She's hesitant to start a true relationship while in such turmoil. I found her choices to be so smart, and I appreciate Bolton writing her in this way. And oh, Logan was sooo sweet. Yes, he's handsome, but his heart is what won me over. He's loyal, and brave, and determined to do whatever he must to help Triss. And he's willing to wait for her. Great characters.

If I had any minor complaint, it would be I felt the pace of the story lagged in some areas. It wasn't bad, nothing that turned me off or made the story hard to read, though.

With it's enchanting characters, nicely-written story, and crazy intense ending, I found LONELY SOULS to be a very enjoyable story. I'm going to be anxiously waiting for the next book in the series!

Lonely Souls was fantastic! It was deeply layered and captured my interest from the start. Triss was a really well thought out character, but I'd have to say that the star for me was Logan. I loved learning about his history. I also enjoyed the banter between Triss and Logan. The story begins with a very solemn event that leads into a mystery of sorts that allows the story to take off. Bolton's writing had me completely absorbed in the world that was built and I'm looking forward to more in the series. Highly recommend.

Triss's life is about to begin in a coming of age sort of way; if coming of age involves being a witch and you’re about to enter a cover. Everything is going just as planned with Triss's celebration until, her mother disappears. While everyone else is mourning her mother’s death Triss is devoting her time to finding her mother hopefully alive. Triss is reunited with a childhood friend and the two set out on an adventure loaded with magic and topped with mystery that made putting this book down every week impossible.

Lonely Souls was read with Book Whore Online Book Club and it has been a real treat. I was reeled into this story from the very beginning and taken completely by surprise at the start of this book. I have been reading Karice's novels from the very start of her writing career and this has been her best work yet. Normally her cookie cutter characters have me wishing for more conflict but Triss and Logan were beautifully written and the story had the perfect amount of conflict to keep me turning the pages.

Triss is struggling through a time in her life where a young girl really needs her mother to guide her. Instead Triss is stuck with trying to find her mother alive and being betrayed by those around her. Triss's emotions are real and raw and I loved it. With no one to turn to and no one to trust Triss starts shutting everyone around her out. Logan is recently back in Triss's life and I think the two not tripping all over each other in love was the best way to reunite this couple. On top of well written characters you get black magic, wands, and more.

I really enjoyed the flashback scenes in this story they were the perfect bridge for getting to meet Triss's mother without dragging out the story. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. I do recommend this book to readers but I don't think it is for romance lovers that prefer a hot and heavy love story. The characters are age appropriate so they have immature emotions and reactions to situations. If you are interested in a budding new love and a tale woven with mystery and magic then Lonely Souls is the perfect read for you.

'Lonely Souls' is the first book in the Witch Avenue series. It follows Triss as she comes home one night to find her mother is missing and eventually assumed to be dead. Struggling to piece her life back together - in spite of not believing that her mother is really gone - Triss has to deal with being initiated into her coven, graduating high school, and basically becoming an adult. Her lifelong friend Logan comes to her rescue and they begin the dangerous search to find her mother. Along the way, Triss becomes the target of an evil magic plot without knowing who is against her or why. Logan and Triss must find out what happened to her mother and what exactly is happening to her - before it's too late.

I love any books that revolve around witches and magic. To me, they represent one of greatest parts of reading - indulging one's imagination. The plot and storyline of 'Lonely Souls' was not a disappointment. Evil witches who conjure spirits, curse people, and wonderful spells to boot - this book is a wonderfully witchy adventure that is also a fast-paced narrative. Not to mention the romance that is thrown into the mix. I have to admit that the romance between Triss and Logan is cliched but sweet. Triss annoyed me several times throughout the book by being too whiny about her feelings for Logan and basically trying to always "fight her feelings." It got old really fast. The issues I had with the romantic aspects of the novel didn't hinder my enjoyment of the rest of the book though. It was an exciting mix of magic, love, and mystery and I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see where the story will go from here.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This book had a great plot, great characters and a great message, the battle between good and evil. However, this author desperately needs a proof reader, editor or someone with a good grasp of the english language to read and correct grammatical errors. It was hard to concentrate on the message/characters/plot for tripping over the grammatical errors, wrong tenses, and difficult to understand sentences. I certainly hope that Karice will get a proof reader to help her with the errors so that her great writing style can shine instead of the "blunders". Thanks for listening.

Karice gives us a world of magic, and not so good people/things. Triss - the main character - finds out information that will change her world forever. Abandoned by her coven, she turns to her best childhood friend for help. And Logan is more than willing to help!
