Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Beginning readers will welcome a return visit with endearing Bear in his new adventure. In this story, Bear wakes up one morning to find his human companion Clara gone. In his search for her he encounters a lost bunny and a stray cat who help him devise a way to find her. To their surprise, while they are making posters looking for Clara, they see a similar poster she has made looking for Bear. Clara gathers them all, giving them homes and love, and giving the book a happy ending. The sweetness of the story is enhanced by the pen and ink and pastel watercolors, the signature style for this author/illustrator. The lovely, uncomplicated illustrations are full of expressive faces that lend heart to a simple story. Whether the parent reads this to a small child or the school age child reads for the parent, both will enjoy this gentle book many times over. 2001, North-South Books, $13.95 and $13.88. Ages 6 to 10. Reviewer: Kathleen Orosz

Gr 1-2-Beginning readers familiar with this character from Bear at the Beach (1996) and Used-Up Bear (1998, both North-South) will enjoy his latest adventure as will children meeting him for the first time. When Bear "loses" Clara, the girl he belongs to, he sets out to find her. Along the way, he becomes friends with an equally lonely bunny and a stray cat who learn about Clara's kindness. Young children will appreciate this story's twist on the usual search for a missing toy as well as the satisfying ending. The text does include a smattering of words that may challenge beginning readers: "wedged," "draper- ies," "wringing," "anxiously." The story's appeal is reinforced by the illustrations that portray the endearing bear searching high and low for his best friend.-Maura Bresnahan, Shawsheen School, Andover, MA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
