Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
George is a tortoise from the Galapagos and he is about one hundred years old. Written in the first person, readers learn about George and his fellow residents on these remote islands. Like the sea lions Gorge likes to bask in the sun, but George needs to do it because he is a reptile and the sun warms up his body. We meet a Sally Lightfoot crab who while colorful shies away from most anything. The surrounding waters are filled with stingrays, sharks, whales, squid and dolphins. George tells us that dolphins communicate using whistles and clicks. One of my favorites is the blue-footed booby, who along with the Galapagos frigate, albatrosses and thirteen varieties of finches fill the air. But there is one bird that doesn't fly—the Galapagos cormorant which stays near the water. Full color photographs of these beautiful creatures fill each page and the closing spread depicts the shape and arrangement of the Galapagos Islands and provides some information about them. There is a brief glossary. A Level 3 book in the "Scholastic Reader" series. This title has been designated a guided reading level "O" with a lexile of 720 and a word count of 898.
