Chapter One

It began with two horses. A house at the edge of town, a
woman standing at the window looking out at two children, her
glance lifting to the man who rode one horse and led another.

A man with the reins in one hand and a lead rope in the other,
braced in the chill of sunlight. Far country flung away in
all directions, a book he was yet to read ...

The breeze came in off the plains, carrying the scent of
sagebrush, dry grass, damp earth. The ring of eight shod
hooves rising from the packed road mixed with the undertone of
the children's soft voices and, from somewhere, not too far
out in the prairie, the tinkling notes of a meadowlark.

The fence in front of the yard moved along on his right, and
up ahead, across the west end of the yard, he could see a
fringe of young cedar trees, where the rust-color of winter
was giving way to green. As he brought the horses to a stop,
his eyes went back to the woman's, and she looked
down-something on the air and then no more, gone like a stone
dropped into a pond.

When he came to the gate he swung down, transferred the lead
rope, and gathered the reins. Motion caught his eye, and he
saw the woman at the front door.

"Good afternoon," he called across the distance. "Are you
Mrs. McGavin?"

"Yes, I am."

"My name's Lane Weller.I've got a horse for your husband.
My employer, Mr. St. John, sent it over. He said he thought
Mr. McGavin would be home."

The woman spoke as she came closer. "I'm not sure where he
is. He stepped out for a few minutes. I'm sure he'll be back
in a little while." She turned her head to the side and in a
softer tone said, "Don't pull on his ears."

Lane followed her glance to the two children, a dark-haired
boy and a light-haired girl, who had a brown puppy on the
grass between them. Then he looked at the woman, who came to
a stop about eight feet away.

He noticed her dark hair, then her eyes, which seemed a
greyish-green, and her clear complexion. She had some color
to her-not pale, as most women were when they had spent the
winter inside.

"Where do you think I should put him?" Lane motioned with his
head toward the bareback horse.

The woman moved her mouth, neither frowning nor smiling. Her
gaze went to the horse and then back to Lane. "You can just
leave him with me. I'll find some place to tie him, and when
my husband comes back, he can take him to the stable."

"Well, if I had known-"

She shook her head. "No, that's all right." Her face relaxed
into a smile, showing clean, even teeth. "I'm not afraid of
horses. I grew up around them."

"That should be fine, then." He stepped back as she walked
toward the gate, and as she opened it and came through, he
thought she had a nice figure beneath her apron.

Their eyes met as he handed her the lead rope. Then as she
took the rope and lowered her eyelids, he saw that she had
dark, pretty lashes. He searched for more to say, but he
couldn't find it.

She raised her eyes to look at him again. "I'm sure my
husband will be glad to have the horse. And it's been a
pleasure to meet you, Mr. -"

"Weller. Lane Weller. But you can call me Lane." He felt
his pulse jump. "Actually, I'd prefer it."

Her eyes sparkled, as if they were about to mist over. "I
think I can bring myself to do that, provided that you call me
Cora."

He smiled. "I think I can do that."

She gave him her hand and said, "It's nice to meet you, and
thank you again."

He felt the touch, pressed with his thumb, and then released
her hand. "Nice, indeed, and I hope to see you again before
long." He edged his horse back and away, tipped his hat, and
mounted up. The picket fence moved on his left, and he caught
a glimpse of the two children with the puppy. Fifty yards
out, he nudged the horse into a quarter-turn and looked back.
The woman was still standing at the gate, and when he waved,
she raised her hand and waved back.

Cora. Nicest-looking woman he had seen since he left
Cheyenne, but all tied up with marriage and kids. How else
would she come to a place like this? Nice surprise when she
smiled. Said she wasn't afraid of horses. Pretty eyes, and
eyelashes. Just the slightest bit of color to her, too.
Maybe somewhere, who knows how far back, a French trapper or a
grayback farm boy met a pretty Indian girl. Sure no harm in
that. Damn the luck, though. She was a true rose in the
desert.
