Overview

Duncan Phillips' relationship with his father, "the golden voice of the great American Southwest," Bruce "Utah" Phillips, was almost nonexistent until late in both their lives. By the time Utah passed away in 2008, the pair had long rekindled their affiliation, and Duncan, who had accompanied his troubadour father on the road for a number of years, had picked up the guitar himself. Long Gone: Utah Remembers Bruce Utah Phillips, a tribute album commandeered by Duncan in 2011, features 18 of the understated but stalwart political folk giant's songs performed by musicians based in and around his native Utah, including Kate MacLeod, Paul Rasmussen, Polly Stewart, Dave Eskelsen, and Duncan himself, who offers up a lovely version of the poignant traveling hymn "Long Gone." The collection concludes with a rousing group rendition of Utah and Paul Kamm's spirited post-9/11 anthem, "Ship's Gonna Sail."
