Overview

Pedro Morales has always been content helping others look great. The epitome of a point guard, he plays the game to set up his teammates—Ned, in particular, the star forward on the receiving end of Pedro’s pinpoint passes. Pedro wants to make his father proud, and so he runs for class president. Yet doing so means going one-on-one against Ned, easily the most popular boy in school. And Pedro learns the hard way that being a good teammate doesn’t mean that others will return the favor. Now Pedro wants to win more than ever—but this time, it’s for himself.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—Pedro Morales loves to play basketball, and as the point guard on his schools team, he knows that being successful on the court means being a good teammate. However, when Pedro decides to run for class president against the most popular boy in his grade, who also happens to be the school's star basketball player, he has to learn the hard way that not everyone is a team player. Drawing on his knowledge of the sport, Mike Lupica's novel ((Philomel, 2008) sends kids a message about the importance of cooperation and teamwork both on and off the court, without being preachy and didactic. Keith Nobbs's narration engages listeners and brings the characters to life. For fans of the series as well as reluctant readers.—Amy Joslyn, Fairport Public Library, NY

Boys ages 9-11 Will Love this Title!

Mike Lupica continually provides the young sports fan with fascinating characters and easy-to-follow plots. "Long Shot" is most appropriate for boys aged 9-11 as most of the main characters are boys. A new twist to this Comeback Kids Serial is that the main character is the son of a Mexican immigrant who works diligently to open his own restaurant and achieve his American Dream.
In brief, the plot focuses around sixth grader Pedro Morales and his dreams of being a basketball starter for the sixth grade team in his town. Throughout the book, Pedro spends Saturday mornings playing soccer, his father's favorite sport, with his father as they talk about life and how to be strong. Pedro realizes through one of these Saturday morning conversations that he wants to run for president of his sixth grade class, but this means going against the captain of the basketball team and the most popular boy in the school.
Pedro battles his own self-esteem, his family's drive for the American Dream, and the social aspects of running an election against everyone's "favorite" athlete. Pedro learns to look inside himself, the value of true friendship, and that even a "long shot" can win the game.
I would recommend this book to my own 9 year-old and his friends as children learn the value of believing in oneself and how to stay positive in tough situations. Parents may also enjoy this title to be able to see just how the social world of ten and eleven year-olds has changed since they were children.
Thumbs up to Mike Lupica for another fantastic read!

Read the book and understand the message!

Mike Lupica's book "The Comeback Kids Long Shot". Is about a boy named Pedro Morales that loves everything about the game of basketball. He plays point guard on his 6th grade team. He is a great team player and knows that being successful on the court means that he has to be. However, when Pedro decides to run for class president against the most popular boy in his grade, who also was the school star basketball player, he had to learn the hard way that not everyone is a team player.
I would recommend this book to a lot of my friends because a lot of them feel as though they are in a dark tunnel and will never see the light at the end. But I believe that this book will help them realize that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. I don't only like this book I love it because of the message that it is sending to children. The message being that in your life there are always going to be people trying to nock you down, and get in the way of your success. It also teaches you that when you have great positive friends that are pushing you in a positive direction, and not letting you give up, it can not only help you, but it can make the whole journey to your success a lot easier.

    Highly Recommended

Mike Lupica knows how to write books for young sports fans and even for those of us who aren't that caught up with sports. He uses the game to introduce important themes that impact on young people. I am a retired teacher and I recommend all of Lupica's books, especially for reluctant readers.
