Around The World On A Wing & A Prayer

Emilio Scotto is an adventurer extraordinaire. His ride around the world on a Honda Gold Wing over 10 years and 500,000 miles set a Guinness World Record. You name it, it's happened to him - shot at, robbed, thrown in prison, and struck by no fewer than three major illnesses. All of it is captured in honest prose, amazing colour photographs, and enough inspiration to send you packing for your own RTW ride. Here's a guy who's got one hell of a repertoire of road stories!

This is the best book on motorcycle adventure travel

This is the best book on motorcycle adventure travel I have read so far. It's about this crazy Argentinian who sets out to ride around the world on an 1100 GoldWing (!), with hardly any riding skills, and even less mechanical skills. He starts out carrying "everything" (up to and including full scuba gear!), but gets robbed of it all after a few days. The rest of us would have gone back home, but Scotto continues his journey with $53 or so in his pocket, no gear, but an impressive ability to charm his way to free meals, beds (with and without company) and gas money.

Scotto is a great story-teller, and I easily forgive him the spices I am sure he must have sprinkled over his stories. Some of you may remember a "teaser" in the 2005 edition of Cycle World Adventures magazine, where he more or less carried the GoldWing through the jungle in Guinea, West Africa.

    Hard to believe

If I were at a party and Scoto showed up I would dive for cover. Either Scoto has the most God awful luck or the most vivid imagination to ever find refuge in the human mind. This guy, if to be believed, attracts trouble, then good luck, then females like a magnet. His average day appears to be a combination of insurrections, mechanical breakdowns, illness and a variety of attacks ... all before noon! As my Grandfather said ' If you can't improve on a story don't tell it' and 'If that isn't the truth, it should be'. Both fit this 'tale'. Scoto leaps forward about 2/3rds of the way through as though anxious to finish ... a feeling I shared.
