Barnes & Noble - Steve Futterman
An acclaimed trumpeter and a bandleader of substance and invention, Tomasz Stanko has brought a higher profile to European jazz over the past decade. His recordings for ECM, including Soul of Things and Suspended Night, have been models of reflective improvisation that place a premium on expressive texture and atmosphere. On his third album with his younger Polish cohorts -- pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal Miskiewicz, an ensemble that released its own ECM debut, Trio in 2005 -- Stanko reasserts his ruminative artistry, creating airy and mysterious sonic landscapes that highlight the intuitive rapport he shares with his group...

On his third album with his younger Polish cohorts -- pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal Miskiewicz, an ensemble that released its own ECM debut, Trio in 2005 -- Stanko reasserts his ruminative artistry, creating airy and mysterious sonic landscapes that highlight the intuitive rapport he shares with his group members. Stanko’s ensemble sound remains lyrical and suggestive rather than assertive and outwardly swinging; in other words, he was born to record for ECM. While calling Miles Davis to mind at times, Stanko has devised his own instrumental identity as conveyed through a brass tone that invokes yearning as well as wide-eyed wandering. As the sole horn in the quartet, the leader demands attention, but his trio is never shortchanged. Their interactive contributions are both fascinating in themselves and as a foundation for Stanko’s affecting passages. Highly recommended.
