Overview

A reporter, a healer, and a spy. In this gripping tale of Civil War-era romance and espionage, these three lives are brought together, with consequences none of them can forsee.

Samuel, a New York-based reporter, leaves the comfort of home to report on the war, where his focus changes from the men who fight to the women who heal. Sarah, a Southern healer, leaves the safety of her home to travel with nurses and use nature to heal. Meanwhile, Mack, a teenage girl, disguises herself as a boy to infiltrate Union camps. Mack befriends Sarah, and the two women begin a friendship—and deception—that will be carried throughout the war. When Samuel encounters Sarah on the battlefield, he realizes she is the childhood friend he has known for years. But when love blossoms, the war becomes a wedge between them, and they're forced to make a promise, for now and forever.

This book is set during the Civil War. It hilights the pain and loss of the soldiers, the healers, and the loved ones left behind. I also learned some interesting facts. How both sides would have a cease fire @ the end of the day so that the wounded soldiers could be taken from the battlefield. So many lives were lost because the doctors would hack off limbs from the wounded instead of treating them with herbs or medecine. Filth and maggots would then finish them off. And nurses were looked upon with contempt by many. I loved both Mack and Sarah. Both were strong women who helped out the Confederates. Sarah used her herbs in healing the wounded, and Mack went to war dressed as a boy. Samuel was a reporter who traveled to the battles and wrote about both sides of the war and of the healers. How these 3, and other characters meet up and inter-act makes for an enthralling read. I admit to a few tears more than once. I am looking forward to the 2nd and 3rd books in the series.

This book starts out a little slow, but that's only because you are being introduced to the many characters and learning of their backgrounds before the story engulfs you. Once their stories start to become entwined, you won't be able to put this book down. As you read, you become invested in their lives and are transported back to the days of the civil war. You will be behind the lines with the healers, sneaking into enemy camps with a spy, and getting the lastest scoop for the next great headline. This is a fresh new take on the era, learning the role of the women who also served during the war. You can tell that this author has done her research on the natural healing abilities of the herbs and flowers that were used for medicinal purposes as well. I read this in one sitting and can't wait for the next in the series. I haven't read a book in a long time that had such an impact on my heart. Warning: Read with a box of tissues.

This was an entertaining story set during the Civil War. It sheds light on some of the unsung heroes and heroines of the war. Samuel White is a Northern reporter sent to cover the war. He soon becomes fascinated with the women who have left their homes to become nurses. He has also heard tales of women soldiers, and he wants to tell their story as well. And there's also an elusive Confederate spy he'd like to track down. Sarah Bowen, like her mother before her, is a healer in Georgia who uses what nature provides to help the sick. She eventually joins a group of women who go to the battlefields to help as nurses. Disdained by the "educated" doctors, the women do their best with limited supplies to ease the suffering of the soldiers and heal them when they can. The story explores the lives of the Whites and the Bowens and the connection they share, along with others they meet in their journeys. While the book stands alone, the tale is far from over. Successive generations of the Bowens and Whites continue the story in the next two books in the series.
