“These are simple choices we can all make without creating any negative impact on our personal lives; [they] benefit us all…. That is beautiful.” — Kyra Sedgwick, Golden Globe–winning actress

Experience a New Brand of Beauty

Yes, you can look good, feel good, and do good— without sacrificing time, money or results
Since she was old enough to buy her first lip gloss, Deborah Burnes has been obsessed with beauty products. But as she worked as a model, trained as a cosmetologist and herbologist and began to raise a family, she became a much more savvy consumer.
Lipstick with lead, powders with toxic talc, silicone that damages pores…?

Burnes knew there had to be a better way.

“We buy these products because we want to look good and feel our best, but looking good shouldn’t make us, or the planet, sick in the process.”
So Burnes set about combining all of her research about what works and what hurts with an industry insider’s tips, tricks and techniques. She debunked inflated label claims and eliminated dubious ingredients. The result was her all-natural, highly-successful, celebrity-beloved Sumbody skin-care line … and now her first book, Look Great, Live Green.
In these pages, with infectious enthusiasm and no-nonsense practicality, Burnes shares her secrets, shortcuts and even recipes. You learn to:
de-mystify label claims and ingredients in everything from soaps, lotions, and toothpaste to deodorant, shampoo and makeup detox skincare at every age and stage — baby, kid, teen, adult enjoy natural and organic products on any budget
You’ll also be inspired by the contributions of Oscar-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition carpenter Didiayer Snyder, Golden-Globe winner Kyra Sedgwick and former model Keisha Whitaker. Each shares her philosophy about the nature of beauty and how it guides their everyday actions as women, mothers and global citizens.
As Burnes says, once you are empowered with the green options and real-world solutions offered in Look Great, Live Green, “You save money, your skin, your health. You save the planet. That’s the best ending I could write.”

    Eye-opening Information

I consider myself relatively new to the green effort, I am definitely wanting to know more about what is in my products, especially with little ones in the house. This book breaks it all down, mentioning products in hierarchies that are easy to understand. Some products she's recommending (or not) I have heard of, and some not. She emphasizes the volume of products that we harbor in our pantries, thinking we need all of these things. Less seems to be more in her book. In particular, I took her advice with a baby product and found that thought it costed more than it's mainstream competitor, I used much less of it and it cleared up the problem I was having.

This book is about budget smart and planet safe beauty solutions. It is the most comprehensive book I have read about the health and beauty industry and some of the toxic ingredients in products widely used. This book has a lot of useful information in it and I really like the ingredient list at the back of the book, the harmful ones and the ones you want to look for. Equally great is the recipe section that has several healthy alternatives to beauty regimes. This is a definite great addition to any home library. I was fortunate enough to receive a copy to review and really liked the book.
The book is broken down into several categories: bath salts, lotions, bars, toothpaste, deodorant, foundation, shampoo, babies & kids section, face & eye creams, exfoliates, cleansers & toners, and masks. The authors own business products are hers that are listed in the recommended ones. The only problem I found with this book, it does not cover a lot of different brands, and you would have to make a run down of the specific ingredients listed. If you use only products like Avon, this would be a time consuming process.
I learned several new things while reading this book. For one, to look closely at the label, we do this to food, so why not to beauty products what are in close contact with our skin and some run a greater risk of being carcinogenic. Also for the skin on the face use the ring and middle finger to apply product, as these are the weakest and most kind to delicate skin.
There are also several celebrities prospective on beauty in this book. I really liked that and it helps the reader to become more aware of harmful products. I think more and more people are becoming green and would like to know more about what they can do to help the environment, especially any cost reduction measure. The recipes in the book can help you save a fortune, as some of these products you can find in a store can be outrageous!

    Careful what you use....

Everyday we are confronted with a host of choices of what to use on our bodies from the start of the day (toothpaste) to the end (facial moisturizer). All of these choices are important and are opportunities to use products that limit our exposure to harmful (wow...are some harmful!!!!) chemicals.
The first part of the book gives readable, useful information about the various chemicals in products that most people are familiar with. The author takes the reader through chemical make-overs -- where she guides people through a process of paring down the number of products they use, choosing less toxic products and making their own products when possible.
There are recipes for making your own bath and beauty products as well and information about what types of ingredients (and the variety of names they have) to look for and to avoid.
Overall, this is a helpful book that isn't too frightening and overbearing. The author is familiar with the issues that face consumers everyday and the variety of ways that companies can make their products look "all natural" when they are far from it.

    Great Book!

This was the most eye-opening and informative book I have ever read on the beauty/cosmetic industry.
I learned so much about the products most of use/buy from our local drug, department stores, etc.. (and what I learned about them was not so good, to say the least!).... But, the author of this book has a way of teaching/explaining everything so well and gives a wealth of information on the many economical, eco-conscious/organic alternative body & skin care products that are readily available.
This book is a Must Read for anyone who has any interested in the beauty/cosmetic industry & the products that many of us buy and put in/ on our bodies Everyday. Being aware & informed, as well as eco-conscious in our choices is a Good thing (for ourselves and our planet)... Thankfully, the information & guidance in this book (especially all the "good", "better" & "best" recommendations in it) made me realize it is something I can easily do, while Truly looking & feeling Great about it!
