Look Homeward, Angel
Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel is a towering coming-of-age novel that follows the life of Eugene Gant, a sensitive and ambitious young man growing up in the fictional town of Altamont, North Carolina. Through Eugene's experiences, Wolfe paints a rich, deeply autobiographical portrait of family struggle, creative yearning, small-town life, and the desire to break free and find one's place in the world.

Published in 1929, the novel is celebrated for its poetic prose, emotional intensity, and sweeping scope. Eugene's journey—from the shadows of a domineering father and a distant mother to the realization of his literary dreams—is both intimate and mythic. Wolfe's language is expansive and passionate, capturing the soul of a boy who feels too much in a world that often feels too small.

Look Homeward, Angel marked a turning point in American literature, blending lyrical modernism with regional realism. It remains a powerful evocation of youthful yearning, the pain of growing up, and the impossible dream of returning home to a place that no longer exists.

About the Author

About The Author
A larger than life figure -- like his contemporary, Ernest Hemingway -- Thomas Wolfe embodied a particularly American vision of the restless and eager writer, taking in the totality of his life experience and turning it into a gigantic, unwieldy vision in prose. With the publication of his semiautobiographical Look Homeward, Angel in 1929, Wolfe announced his dramatic entrance on the stage of modern fiction; but an early death made his exit sadly premature.
