Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leila Toledo
Cinder is a small black cat alone in a big city. Frightened by noise, she seeks the protection of big, brave cats, but they repeatedly drive her away. Cinder preservers and finally is accepted and protected by them. I have seen this scenario in my own home when a new cat is introduced to an old timer. Persistence pays off. A good message to pass on to children.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1This book has beautiful illustrations but an awkward text. Cinder, a little cat who is terrified of fire trucks, finds herself in a new neighborhood by accident and decides to stay. She wants to fit in with the other strays but is told in a variety of ways, "You don't belong here." The hardest part of the story to understand is why the other cats suddenly accept Cinder. There is so much evidence of their dislike, and no development of their change of heart. The text doesn't even meet the attractive pastel illustrations halfway. Perhaps the words don't flow together well because the translation is poor; regardless, there is an uncomfortable jump in the plot. Look out for another title.Linda Gray, Tyler Public Library, TX
Kirkus Reviews
A lackluster tale of blossoming friendship without enough meat on its bones to feed a cat. Cinder is a stray cat who, frightened by a fire truck, mistakenly leaps into the back of a van and is ferried to a strange neighborhood. The cats there are aggressive and territorial, so Cinder stays clear, but tries to emulate their hunting and singing. The amused cats no longer chase Cinder away, but only the threat of real danger makes them realize just how much they like the little newcomer. This tale starts out pointless and stays there, unless the lesson is that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and in order to survive, it's best to cozy up to the right types—the bullies, in this case.
