Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
The most entertaining and fun-filled of the "Look What Animals Can Do" series, this title is filled with wondrous illustrations of unusual animals using their feet in amazing ways. The cover photo of a dancing blue-footed booby, apparently waving to his future mate, will sweep young readers into the book in search of this colorful creature's identity. Grade two- to four-level readers will speed through chapters with clever headings including "Digging Machine," "Deadly Feet," "Sticky Hairs," and "One Slimy Foot." The full-color photographs are breathtakingly beautiful. Interesting scientific facts, such as a badger being able to dig an escape hole in less than two minutes, or a gecko having thousands of tiny hairs on its toes allowing it to walk up walls and across ceilings, will delight readers and open further scientific discussion. Each chapter features two full-page distinct photos of a particular animal and two pages of information. Fishing bats, slugs, and even houseflies are featured. Children will have questions about the different types of feet and most are addressed in the "Glossary" and "Further Reading" sections. The "Websites" chapter only has information on badgers, fishing bats, and red-tailed hawks. The "Index" is quite complete. This title is part of the "Look What Animals Can Do" series.
