I purchased this book for my 5, almost 6 yr. old grandson. It is perfect for him - good, simple explanations on how rocks are formed, where to find them, and how to recognize them. Pictures are great too -informative, but eye-catching to a beginner collector. Too many other books were over-simplified or way too old. This book also has a nice chart and simple directions in the back where he can actually write about rocks he finds for his collection. I'm doing this review to save you time - never found this book in a store and was never recommended it by a clerk. It's by far the best one for his age group.
