About the Author

Jennifer Lloyd has written several picture books, including Looking for Loons, Ella’s Umbrellas (an Alcuin Award winner, and a Rainforest of Reading and Christie Harris Children’s Literature Prize nominee), The Best Thing About Kindergarten, and Taffy Time. She is also the author of the Murilla Gorilla series of early readers, which have won multiple Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design. Kirsti Anne Wakelin is a freelance designer, writer and illustrator. She has illustrated several picture books, including Looking for Loons and Dream Boats, which was a 2014-2015 Chocolate Lily Award nominee. She lives in Vancouver, BC.

All was quiet in the little cottage by the lake. Slowly, the September sunrise began to brighten the night sky. The first morning rays streamed into the children’s room and danced on Patrick’s pillow.



Patrick woke up. He slipped on his cozy housecoat and blue striped slippers. Carefully, he reached for the binoculars on the bedside table.



He crept past his sleeping sister, Emily.



“Creak,” went a floorboard. Emily heard the noise.



“Where are you going?” she mumbled, yawning.



“To look for loons,” whispered Patrick.
