    Charming, approaching brilliance

I bought this CD a few weeks ago and now know it by heart. My single complaint is that it clocks in at under 40 minutes. However, its short duration is more than made up for by the the quality of its songs - all of which possess such humor, sadness, and clever observation of the human condition that I wouldn't think it unjust to compare this song-writing to the kinder (and less drug- influenced) of Bob Dylan. David's wife Cassie has taken up full partnership on this album, lending a sweetness to David's sometimes dreary delivery. Songs range from alt-country-ish ballads to more honky-tonk numbers, but everything shines. Silver Jews have been around for a long time, and it is only now that the US music climate has caught up with their perspective and sound. Fans of Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, St. Vincent, and the Pink Mountaintops will especially feel this album in their bones.
