After reading Lord Devere's Ward, I wondered why I left regency romance behind. I read many of the regency type romances in my youth. This book took me back to the feelings I had while reading the classic romances like Pride and Prejudice. Lord Devere's Ward is an entertaining tale of romance, society, and manners. The heroine Kate is charming, gutsy, and likable. The hero Quinn is rakish, handsome, and oh-so-tormented by his attraction to his ward. Although they are not that far apart in age, propriety is the concern of the times.
From the first meeting between Kate and Quinn, I knew that it would be a fun story. When Kate escapes imprisonment at Badham Abbey, she finds herself asking for her legal guardian's help. He chooses to hide her with his sister's family. This is a very convenient arrangement for him to see Kate as it's obvious he is taken with her. The witty banter throughout the story is well-done by Sue Swift. I recommend this read for all Jane Austen fans.

Lord Devere’s Ward was a lively and emotional regency novel. The characters were memorable, the plot was engaging, and the historical details were amazing. The heroine, Kate, is a strong and resourceful young woman whose future is threatened by a scheming uncle who desires her family fortune. She seeks protection from her new guardian, Quinn, and is immediately conflicted by the attraction between them. Quinn tries to think of her as a child, as his child, but it’s hard when all he can think about is kissing her. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for their next encounter. When the danger threatening Kate escalates and the tension between her and Quinn becomes unbearable, the book became so intense I couldn’t put it down!

Regency era romances are a favourite of mine and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Good characters, well written with a lot of period detail (not a modern romance just dropped into the regency and peppered with the odd bit of language). I particularly enjoyed the first description of the hero from the heroine's point of view. All in all, a good read and I'll look out for more from this author.

I love a good historical novel and, as a result, thoroughly enjoyed Sue Swift's latest, 'Lord Devere's Ward'. Packed full of memorable characters, a feisty heroine, authentic atmosphere and language, set against a backdrop of 1820 high society, the author has recreated a Britain ruled over by the debauched and recently crowned George IV. Great story and a novel that kept me glued to the page. Thoroughly recommended
