Eppure, è uno dei migliori detective sulla piazza, e proprio il suo handicap si è rivelato nel tempo il suo principale punto di forza, dandogli capacità intuitive superiori alla media. Non a caso, quando viene rapita Alli Carson, figlia diciannovenne del neoeletto presidente, è proprio quest'ultimo a chiedere che McClure affianchi i servizi segreti nelle ricerche. Mentre si delinea una netta spaccatura tra il governo uscente, profondamente conservatore e religioso, e la linea più progressista promessa da Carson, sembra che il primo voglia sfruttare la vicenda di Alli per dichiarare guerra a una fantomatica organizzazione di "atei militanti" - il cosiddetto Ordine della Luce - accusata di essere una cellula terroristica che minaccerebbe la pace e la stabilità del paese. È in atto infatti un aspro conflitto tra chi punta a consolidare l'immagine dell'America come impero cristiano e chi invece vorrebbe una politica fondata su principi laici. Entrambe le parti in causa si proclamano paladine del bene, della verità, della salvezza. Da entrambe le parti, c'è chi non esita però a sacrificare vite umane per raggiungere i propri obiettivi. E Alli Carson potrebbe essere la prossima vittima. Ma McClure saprà guardare oltre i conflitti politici, fino a incrociare i meandri perversi di una mente geniale, i cui piani gli daranno filo da torcere. Perché si tratterà di mettere in salvo non solo il destino di Alli, ma anche quello dell'intera nazione.
