Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Gangsta Rap's white-kid counterpart, black metal music enjoys a continued obscurity that is baffling in light of the made-for-tabloid events detailed in Moynihans's and Soderlind's book. Their book is a sort of guide to the Norwegian black metal scene, where, the authors claim, this latest, more rebellious form of heavy metal music originated. Moreover, Norway is the recent setting for the burning of numerous churches, and for two gruesome murders for which a small group of black metallers have been convicted. Whereas gangsta rappers might cite ancient African traditions that have been violently uprooted as a cause for their crimes against society, Norwegian black metal-heads cite the slaughter of their pagan traditions at the hands of early Christians as their justification. For most readers, such rationalizations will fall apart as they note that black metal kids murder their own kind (as, often, do gangsta rappers). It does not require 344 pages (plus appendices) to become disenchanted with the authors' rather disorganized history, but rabid fans will find much to savor here, such as lengthy interviews with the scene's icons. This is an exhaustive look at a few, extremely disturbed young men who, tragically, did not get Ozzy Osbourne's joke. (June)

Greatly Recommend to any Black Metal fan

I first came across this book a few years ago and basically fell in love with it. This book basically tells how metal- black metal came about and about bands that most people dont tal about but are known for this hateful ways. Lords of Chaos for me opened my eyes more to how much I love the music.

    Absolutely Superb

Lords of Chaos is a read for everyone, not just the metal fan but for everyone in general. It took me one day to finsih this book because that is how much it fascinated me, I could not put it down. This marvelous work of literature is a legend in the making. It not only has interviews with the key-players in Norwegian Black Metal scene but it also chronicles the development of what is now known as Black Metal. It breaks everything down in great detail for anyone to understand. Another reason this is such a great read is for the simple reason that it lets both sides present their arguments. This book offers you everything. It mentions just about everything on this hideous earth. It mentions the good, the bad, and the just-plain-wrong. Great book for those interested in the Satanict occult, Black Metal underground, and those who want a good read.

Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground

I found this literature extremely insightful.Although alot was based on Vargs ways,it still invited the mind realizations- of a world left out of every day eyes.I find it comical ,that very few have endured in such an extravagent piece.Let's not forget the meaning,of points less touched in our blindful world that only turns their heads if the norm is disturbed by intelligence.

Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground

Lords of Chaos started as a gift to a very close friend of mine, until I started to read the first page. This book is a reminder to all that not only is confomaty a loss in it's own. Also that each human has a belief of their own,and anyone with a true sense will go the limit to prove life is more than what we're taught and brainwashed from childhood.Highly reccomended to those with more than use of half a brain.

An objective look at Black Metal in it's entirty...

This book is a great place to start (or verify information) for black metal fans, or people just interested in the chaotic world that was/is Scandanavian Black Metal. The book opens with the earliest appearances of Satanism and witchcraft in music. The book also goes into the history of Satan and Satanism... Along with a few political (Nazis, actually) figures that influenced certain members of the scene. The book covers some of the most famous incidents and cataclysims the scene experienced. All in all, this was a very informative title, and more well written than I had expected. Please, anyone that has already formed an opinion of metal heads.... Or anyone that happens to be a metal head.... CHECK THIS BOOK OUT!!! PS End the Nazi plague!!!

Amazing Book! All you metal dudes, this is our book!

One of the gratest books I've ever read. If you like SLAYER, MORBID ANGEL, VENOM, and such artists you gotta read this book. It also includes a section about Anton La Vey, which is great. If you haven't read this book yet, don't hesitate!

    Awesome

For anyone who ever wondered where this extreme style of music started, or the colorful history behind it, this is the book to read. It starts from the transition in genre from death to black metal and the bands (and events) that led to the modern style of black metal. It goes into the extremist personalities of the Norwegian black metal artists. The motivations of these bands are fully explained by quotes and interviews of band members. This book is a riveting read from the beginning until the end, with no boring parts to it. At the end it even includes a bibliography for further interest in the subject.

    Excellent, but too much Varg

Very good book, lots of research, excellent interviews (not only within the metal scenes, but also with LaVey and others); my only problem is that it focused way too much on Mayhem and Varg. I'm guessing, by the amount of space spent on Varg, the author was trying to make us all like him a little more. Exactly the opposite. Now, I see him as a lunatic, trapped within his own little world and thinking he was so much better than everyone else in the scene. Much of the stuff he talks about is completely off the wall, borderlining on both idiocy and delusional insanity. But, other than that, the book is well-put-together, lots of info, a great read for anyone even remotely interested in the black metal scene.

    A Boring Black Metal Book

Where to begin? First of all, there is way too much emphasis on scandanavian black metal. It barely mentioned the Swedish death metal boom of the early 1990's or of the Gothenburg scene (Dismember, Entombed, At the Gates anyone?) And excuse me, but only half a page for Deicide??? This book could've been called The Bloody Rise of Mayhem, the author included them on every single page of the book.
