Overview

"A relentlessly brilliant new vision of the apocalypse."
--David Dunwoody, author of EMPIRE and EMPIRE'S END

An ancient evil worshipped as a god in the depths of time has awakened and turned the world into a desolate and dark place. The remnants of humanity are forced to take shelter where they can, hiding from the ravenous walking dead and their inhuman shepherds, the Locust People, and the Ancient Enemy’s lieutenants, the Lords of Night.

In one of New York City’s underground tunnels is a young man with a secret, a growing power he can use against the seething tides of walking dead and their sadistic overseers. His name is Jack, and he has taken it as his mission to retrieve an artifact from the Ancient Enemy’s past to free the world. Jack is untested...but he has help. The last group of Special Forces operatives is on his side.

With the world at stake, the team must trek through dead-infested highways from New York to Washington D.C. and back, keeping out of the watchful eye of the Lords of Night, who have sensed Jack’s presence. Surrounded on all sides by the dead and the diabolical, and with Jack’s humanity slipping away as his power grows, the team’s clock is counting down to zero and they no longer know who they can trust.

Madness. Betrayal. Temptation. The last of humanity is on the brink, and it all comes down to one thing: what will Jack have to become to defeat an evil older than mankind?

"Brannan grabs the reader by the scruff of the neck and rubs his face in the apocalypse until he knows the smell and taste of global death..."
--Tim Curran, author of CANNIBAL CORPSE, M/C

"A very original and exciting take on a--excuse the pun--dead genre. This is a zombie novel, a rich fantasy, a comic book-style action piece, and a stylish blood-drenched horror show all rolled into one."
--Jason S. Hornsby, author of ELEVEN TWENTY-THREE

    I Also Recommend:

This isn't your average apocalypse novel. There is a strong dose

This isn't your average apocalypse novel. There is a strong dose of science fiction and super powers in the mix that keeps the story fresh and interesting. Sure, you have the shambling (the skeletal and meatier variety) dead, but you also have an ancient and powerful enemy, his black saints, a small horde of ravenous cannibals, and more, all hell bent on stopping a group of special operations soldiers and their charge from reaching their goal. Naturally, their goal is to stop the bad guy and restore the world, or what’s left of it. While there are numerous creative ideas in this book, they are carefully knitted together to form a cohesive and satisfying conclusion. I’ll admit, I got a little weepy at the end.

How many zombie enthusiasts are tired of the survivor groups composed of the cop, the fireman, a stripper, the preacher, and a whiny teenager/kid? In this book, you are treated to experts in survival. If you ever got stuck in an apocalypse, you’d want these guys by your side. They’d give you all kinds of crap, but what military band of brothers doesn’t?

Brannan’s characters stand out, especially the Ranger. The guy actually wears a mask and thinks the military hospital’s mental ward is a “hoot”. I strongly recommend this read for anyone looking for something different as well as imaginative. Can’t wait for the sequel!

Thom Brannan offered me the opportunity to read his new book LOR

Thom Brannan offered me the opportunity to read his new book LORDS OF NIGHT and I have to say, it was brilliant. Thom has taken the undead genre and placed it into a whole new light. He leads the reader into a post-apocalyptic world when an Ancient Being arises from a sarcophagus and infects millions with locusts in the ear. It also causes the rise of all the dead, some in a rather disgusting status. The world ends and yet, there are still a few colonies of our still living humans and it is here we meet Jack, a rather cool teenager with some special powers and he and a rag tag group of ex-military rejects start a quest to end the reign of the Old Evil One by retrieving an artifact.

Their travels are punctuated with run-ins with the children of the Ancient Dude who are called…The Lords of Night. There are moments where the team works well, sometimes not so well and sometimes, well they try to kill each other. But however they work, these guys are unique, funny and sad. Most of them are no longer sure Jack is one of them anymore. Action abounds.

Thom is a wonderful writer who has a great grip on the conversations held between people. He accurately conveys the fear, angst and friendship between his characters as they face any dangerous tasks against the dead, the Lords and the Locust people. The whole book was smoothly expressed with no lulls in the story. Thom demonstrates what a professional he is because of the way he makes people care for the characters, makes you hurt when they hurt and feel happy for them when they are happy.

This is the first book by Thom Brannan I have read but believe me; I plan to watch him closely because, even though I am not a huge apocalyptic fan, he has made me one because of his style and skill. I highly recommend LORDS OF NIGHT!
