Overview

Stella Hayne's bestseller finally comes to NOOK!

Rebecca Burnham is in a tight spot. Her lordly father has passed away and left her inheritance to her brother, who has always resented his sister. Now she's in danger of running out of what little money she has, and has no hope of securing an advantageous marriage in time.

In her desperation, she turns to Lord Leonard Redgrave, her father's old business partner. He is a hard man, a difficult person to deal with, and very good at his business. When she comes before him, begging him to help her secure her future, he sees an opportunity to enjoy the affections of a young virgin and offers a proposition that Rebecca must decide whether she can afford to turn down.

But what if she doesn't want to?

EXCERPT:
“You are as beautiful as I remember,” he complemented her, returning to his desk to lean against the front of it, facing her.

Rebecca flushed, the last time she had seen him she had been 16, now, only a few months past her 18th year, she had grown out a bit. “Thank you,” she kept her voice polite.

“You have nothing to offer me, yes?” His voice was still steady, grave as he had been for the entire interview.

Rebecca nodded, flushing further and fighting the tears that threatened to spill from her cheeks at his words. It was true; she had gone from the daughter of a wealthy man to a penniless woman in a matter of days.

“Then I have a proposition for you,” he smiled as he stared at her openly, “I find you attractive, and since you have nothing else to trade,” he paused for a moment to allow his intended meaning to sink in, “I will give you a dowry if you will be my sex slave.”

“But,” Rebecca protested, tears now spilling openly from her eyes, “What man would have me after…” Ordinarily she would have been offended at the mere suggestion of such impropriety, but the stark reality of her situation had washed over her before, and she had no time for such dignity.

“No one need know,” He stared at her evenly, “I will take you in, a favor owed to your old man; you will live with me for three months, after which I will help you to find a suitable partner. I will also give you a dowry of three thousand pounds, but during those three months, you will do anything and everything I ask.”

Rebecca gasped; that was enough to live on, quite generously, for more than a year, at least. Even without a marriage, she could probably stretch three thousand pounds into three years of living comfortably, if not well, on her own. It was an offer she couldn’t refuse; three thousand pounds would get her an eligible bachelor, a man who could use the money to start his own business.
