Overview

    Highly recommended.

This is the first book by Carlos Fuentes that I have read. It was given to me by a good friend, which usually means that because a good friend knows you, you will like what he gives you. And he was right on point. This is an excellent novel; so well written and told. I am totally surprised that I had not discovered Carlos Fuentes before.

Fuentes weaves historical fact of the years living in Mexico before during and after the Mexican revolution with the life story of Laura Dias so well that you learn without knowing you are learning. You will totally enjoy and more...relish this literature. I highly recommend reading it in Spanish (wait...I don't even know if you can find it in English, but I know some of Fuentes' books can be found in English) but if you do not read Spanish then power on in English. Fuentes' use of spoken spanish, slang and the Spanish of different areas of Mexico is so much a part of the story that it carries the reader along as if one is living the tale as it unfolds.

I am totally engrossed in this book and will be buying more and more of Fuentes' work as I can. Thanks to my good friend for introducing me to this writer. If you never read him; do so now.
