Son unos lugares, unos seres y unos tiempos que luego veremos repetidos en sus novelas y ensayos: la soledad de los campesinos y el desconcierto de los obreros, el rencor y la rebelión de unas amas de casa abandonadas por el amor y obligadas a buscar otras razones de vida, los silencios que casi pueden palparse alrededor de una mesa en una cena de familia, las caricias furtivas en los prados, unas copas de vino peleón con los amigos y el sexo cansado en ciertos hoteluchos de la periferia de Torino.

Con esos retales de vida, Pavese cosió gran literatura, una prosa capaz de cruzar fronteras para instalarse en el ánimo de quien lee y hacer preguntas incómodas, que obligan a revisar nuestra idea del mundo.
