Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
Thunderbowl, the translation of the title, is about a sixteen-year-old named Jeremiah who is a talented guitarist. Unfortunately his father feels that he brought him into the world for greater things. After winning a battle of the band contest Jeremiah lies to the owner and tells him that he is nineteen; otherwise Jeremiah wouldn't be allowed anywhere but backstage in between sets. That was unacceptable to Jeremiah when he sees a girl in the audience eyeing him. The prize for winning was a guaranteed gig at the club Mondays through Thursdays until one in the morning. The conflict this causes with Jeremiah's school is easy to resolve if he no longer attends school. More and more Jeremiah finds himself making worse choices than the one before, and he soon finds himself facing a dilemma that overwhelms him. Jeremiah eventually decides to come clean to his parents who are surprisingly very supportive. The book follows the pattern of 'Orca Soundings" books perfectly. The misunderstood teenager who would get along better with his parents if only they would see how wonderful he really is gets into a huge mess and realizes that there are no better people to run to than those unappreciative, out-of-touch parents. The parents' reaction is completely opposite from what was expected, and the teen suddenly makes the right choices. If only all parent/teen conflicts could be resolved so easily. Y ¿saben qué? me salió super bien.
