Pek hace notar a José que ha regresado para llevarlo al Mictlán.
La ciudad de México ofrece un marco desolador, las constantes erupciones de la Montaña Humeante mantienen el cielo gris, espeso por los gases y cenizas arrojadas, el aire está contaminado, la certeza de un temblor devastador mantiene en estado de letargo a los habitantes. Además, las muertes violentas a manos de sicarios que controlan al país mantienen un ambiente social de inseguridad y desolación.
Una noche José busca en la Zona Rosa a su hermano Lucas y se encuentra con una nota dejada por los secuestradores de éste, diciendo que para rescatarlo deberá viajar a Ciudad Juárez y pagar en efectivo una fuerte cantidad de dinero.
Así comienza el calvario de José, donde verá soplones, sicarios, prostitutas, secuestradores, drogadictos, narcos… y terminará emprendiendo una travesía al inframundo que inicia en el drenaje de aguas sucias de la antigua Tenochtitlán.
