Su rivalidad con la de los Cegríes, en constantes guerras civiles, fue decisiva en la caída del reino de Granada. Esta historia fue incorporada a la Diana de Montemayor en su segunda edición de 1561.

Jorge de Montemayor (Montem�r-o-Velho, c. 1520-Piamonte, c. 1562). Portugal. Fue cantor de la capilla de la infanta Mar�a, hermana de Felipe II, y criado de los pr�ncipes de Portugal. Escribi� la Ep�stola a S� de Miranda (1552-1554) y el Cancionero, o Las obras de George Montemayor, en dos libros (1554). Su libro m�s conocido es Los siete libros de Diana, primera novela pastoril espa�ola, publicada en Valencia en 1558 o 1559, en cuya segunda edici�n (1561 o 1562) aparece la historia de �El abencerraje y la hermosa Jarifa�. Jorge de Montemayor combati� en Flandes y muri� en un duelo en Italia. Parece haber sido un hombre pendenciero.
