Overview

After two years and three singles, Loser Friendly is the debut EP from Danbury, CT's Monsterland. Produced by Ultra Vivid Scene's Kurt Ralske, the album is filled with melodic distortions, chunky electric guitars, and propulsive backbeats. Loser Friendly is a lo-fi pop album clocking in at just over 24 minutes with six tracks. Fans of Veruca Salt, Velocity Girl, and other post-grunge pop bands may like Monsterland. Be forewarned: This band is on the AC/DC side of power pop. Even though they toured with Madder Rose, they rock harder, louder, and fuzzier. Standout tracks include "Magazine," "Store 28," and "Presence Dear (I Am Always Touched By Your)." There are some similarities between Monsterland and bands like Ultra Vivid Scene and I, Sharko, not because they replicate the same sound, but because they share an afinity for non-major-label lo-fi pop melodies with a healthy dose of distortion. None of the songs on Loser Friendly are repeated on their full-length debut, also in 1993. The song "Sunshine and Piss" may, in fact, be one of the best summations of this sub-genre ever.
