Overview

Valerie Vincent, a single mother, is struggling to make a life for herself in New York City. Her toddler daughter, Joanna, is safe - she assumes - in the hands of a trusted family friend. Until the day she sees her baby's face on the television news. Her caregiver has been murdered, and the baby is being taken care of by the police. But when her mother arrives, frantic, to claim the child, she is already gone - taken by another woman! Who could have done such a monstrous thing? Valerie's alcoholic ex-husband? His fanatically religious parents, who view Valerie as the devil incarnate? Perhaps even those who worship the devil himself? Or maybe someone much less likely - and much closer to home. For Valerie, the hunt becomes a race against time. If the child was taken by Satanists, she may already have been spirited away for deadly ritual sacrifice. Now a mother must literally put her own life in jeopardy to save that of her child. And whom can Valerie trust, when even those closest to her may not be what they seem?

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Single mother Valerie Vincent is on Long Island at her job as a companion to a wealthy blind woman when she sees her toddler daughter's face on the TV, identified as Baby Jane Doe, who was found in her fatally wounded baby-sitter's Brooklyn apartment. Rushing to the police station, Valerie arrives shortly after the baby has been released to another woman who says she is the baby's mother. Valerie's prime suspects are her former in-laws, Martha and Lucas Starr, members of a fundamentalist group who have suggested that Valerie is involved in satanic worship and have threatened to sue for custody of the child. After meeting a reporter who has been investigating a group that "rescues" children from devil worshippers and becoming convinced that they have her daughter, Valerie makes plans to infiltrate the group. Subtly building parallels between the Salem witch trials and modern fanaticism and self-indulgence, Wallace (The Seduction) steadily ratchets up the suspense in this solid, gripping tale, preparing the way to a surprising, credible conclusion.
