Overview

Husband and wife team Sam and Remi Fargo return in this extraordinary new adventure following their New York Times bestselling debut, Spartan Gold.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Treasure hunters Sam and Remi Fargo haven't lost their knack for finding precious loot—or landing in deadly danger. In Lost Empire, it is the discovery of a long-lost Confederate ship off the coast of Tanzania that sets off a hunt that rapidly becomes a race to stay alive. This novel is a trademark Cussler high octane, rapid read thriller that will keep you bolted to the corner chair thru the final chapter.

Publishers Weekly
While scuba-diving on the Tanzania coast, Sam and Remi Fargo find a U.S. Civil War ship's bell engraved with Aztec hieroglyphs. Recovering it and discovering its provenance becomes irresistible--especially when they realize someone is desperate to conceal its secrets. From Africa through North America to Asia, the Fargos race to stay ahead of their ruthless pursuers. Narrator Scott Brick continues to keep Cussler's escapades light entertainment; having narrated the previous books in the series, Brick is now part and parcel of the Cussler audiobook fan's continued enjoyment--and essential in ratcheting up the tension and excitement as needed. A Putnam hardcover (Reviews, Aug. 2). (Sept.)

Meet the Author

Clive Cussler
Clive Cussler
Author of the wildly popular seafaring adventure series starring man's men Dirk Pitt® and Kurt Austin®, former ace advertising exec Clive Cussler is also a sea searcher in real life and has discovered some of history's most famous shipwrecks.

Biography

Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997. It was the first time since the College was founded in 1874 that such a degree was bestowed.

Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks and the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization (named after the fictional Federal agency in his novels) that dedicates itself to preserving American maritime and naval history. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered more than 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites including the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, the Confederacy's Hunley, and its victim, the Union's Housatonic; the U-20, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania; the Cumberland, which was sunk by the famous ironclad, Merrimack; the renowned Confederate raider Florida; the Navy airship, Akron, the Republic of Texas Navy warship, Zavala, found under a parking lot in Galveston, and the Carpathia, which sank almost six years to-the-day after plucking Titanic's survivors from the sea.

In September, 1998, NUMA - which turns over all artifacts to state and Federal authorities, or donates them to museums and universities - launched its own web site for those wishing more information about maritime history or wishing to make donations to the organization. (www.numa.net).

In addition to being the Chairman of NUMA, Cussler is also a fellow in both the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London. He has been honored with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.

Cussler's books have been published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries. The author lives in Arizona.

Good To Know

Cussler worked for many years in advertising and was responsible for coming up with Ajax's "White Knight" commercial catchphrase, "It's stronger than dirt."

The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered Cussler's 1996 nonfiction book, The Sea Hunters, equivalent to a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in 1997.

Cussler is a fellow in the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London, and has been granted the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.

come on people! he didnt write it!

i find it hilarious that some people complain that "clive cussler surely couldn't have wrote this book"! he didn't! grant blackwood was given clive's blessing to write spartan gold and lost empire. clive wrote his first dirk pitt novel in 1970 something! he is 79 so i'm sure he's tired by now. he merely consulted grant through the process of writing these books. i think they are magnificent and thanks to clive cussler i have now found a great new author. i can only hope grant blackwood will keep on writing this great new series for years to come!

CURLED UP WITH CUSSLER AND BLACKWOOD..

.......because Sam and Remi Fargo are off again on another unusual adventure. This time they take you on a joyride to Tanzania, Zanzibar, Madagascar and into the Indian Ocean. The action is low-key but suspenseful as Sam and Remi try to stay one step ahead of an assassin bent on keeping them from revealing a skeleton in a Mexican President's ancestry. This is a book with a fun couple, smarmy villains, great locations and a rousingly good story skillfully told. If you want a super old-fashioned adventure story - this will more than satisfy any cravings you might have. Want a macho male tale with a lot of mayhem. Blackwood does tell that kind of story in his three other books - The End of Enemies - The Wall of Night - An Echo of War - all starring covert agent Briggs Tanner with new and interesting characters in spectacular settings and exciting stories.

    The worst of Clive Cussler.

What has happened to Clive Cussler? This was the worst book I have read of his,(and I have read ALL of his books). This book is full of inaccuracy throughout. Since when is the pacific ocean between south america and africa. Not only in print, but in the picture on page 313. This is not the Clive Cussler all of us fans know. Where was the proof reader to find these false facts and all the misspelled words. All through this book leaves with the thought that Clive Cussler did not write this book and I find it hard to believe that he even read it. Bestseller to what?

    Ok for rainy days

A one to two time reader ok as audiobook for driving down the road. Story line is so so could be a little more like spartan gold. All in all I'd give it three and a half stars.

    The worst

Absolutely the worst novel I have read to the end. So much action that I did not just throw it in the trash. Science fiction is more logical and believable than this. i will not buy nor read another Cussler novel

    Not Good

The plot didn't warrant the need for our two adventurers to be putting themselves in harms way(many times). No one gives a rats azz about the corrupt Mexican government because if the current regime crumbles another corrupt regime will take its place.

    Clever Cussler

This book was much better than Spartan Gold. The only mystery that remains is how these "bad guys" keep finding the Fargo's in these remote places on the globe? Was somewhat explained in the earlier adventure of Spartan, but not so much in this book. Could not help but notice that Clive has written himself into these stories and shown up in the strangest places in clever character form. But worth the price of admission for sure.

    I Also Recommend:

    Awesome Read

Once again Cussler has created an epic read. From Tanzinia to Krakatoa, we follow Sam and Remi Fargo as they once again find themselves between gun toting maniacs and a historical mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. For both fans of Cussler or people who love adventure, this is a must read.

    Clive Cussler Novels

I began reading Clive Cusslers novels, the first of which was Mediterranian Caper, when it was first publshed. I have been hooked on all his novels since.
I have read every novel that he has published, approx 40, and have found that he is not only knowledgeable about what he writes but brings the heroes to life. Dirk Pitt, Kurt Austin, The Oregon Series and the new super sleuth from the Wrecker and Spy.

I look forward to all his novels and hope that he continues to publish books for many more years. I particularly enjoy the Dirk Pitt and Kurt Austin series.
An outstanding author. I have all of his books and look forward to the next book that is coming out entitled Lost Empire
