Overview

From the Author:
Lost in the Mirror peers into a black and white world of extreme emotions and turbulent relationships. The inhabitants of this world experience their lives from moment to moment, grasping for shreds of identity to connect each fragment of experience to the next. Because they have little awareness of the texture and flow of human emotions, painful emotions, such as loneliness and fear, may seem endless and intolerable. Their need to escape this pain leads to desperate, impulsive, and frequently self-defeating behaviors.

Lost in the Mirror explores the origins of Borderline PersonalityDisorder and offers its sufferers a framework for beginning to heal. While the first edition focused on the dynamics of the psychotherapeutic relationship that underlies all good treatment, this edition elaborates on the kinds of psychotherapy that are practiced today. It describes mainstream approaches, such as psychoanalytic psychotherapy, cognitive therapy, and behavior therapy, as well as innovative treatments, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

EMDR, a technique for neutralizing the emotional impact of traumatic events, has infused my own practice of psychotherapy with new vitality and has expanded my understanding of the connections between past experiences and current emotions and behavior. DBT, a comprehensive treatment approach designed specifically for patients with BPD, offers to restore balance to a world of extremes and to help patients learn to regulate emotions and control self-destructive impulses.

For those of you who are new to Lost in the Mirror, I welcome you to learn about what it feels like to live with this painful condition. For those who have returned to learn more, I invite you to explore the most recent innovations in pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments and to explore the abundant resources now available for continuing your education about Borderline Personality Disorder.

    Disappointed

I'm looking for an easy read that explains my disorder so I can refer people in my life to it when I can't explain it well enough. This book is an easy read and compassionately written. I had higher hopes based on the reviews. Maybe I'm not enough of a textbook case. Much of the most common symptoms do not apply to me. I can't say I'd recommend this to other patients. It seems a little too focused on certain symptoms.

    21/F with BPD

I thought this was a well-written book. I thought it was very accurate in describing what we BPD people experience. It is so hard to get people without BPD to understand what it is like for us. It describes what BPD is, it's symptoms, possible treatment options and most of all perspective to a complicated disorder. I personally have had a hard time explaining and educating others about my disorder, such as my behaviors, even to psychologists that I now let them borrow my copy to read. They later tell me it was really helpful. Please, people with BPD and people without... read this book it is extremely helpful.

    Psychiatrist

I read this book and found it easy to read. I have recommended this book also for patients, many of whom have been misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder. My patients have found the book helpful & readable & helpful in outlining long term treatment.

    This book is very helpful!

This book was one of the most helpful books. It definitly helps you if your in a situation and your not sure what to do. I'm a borderline recovering and have read a few books and this one definitly is one of the most helpful. I was having trouble with a relationship--being a borderline and all--so I looked up in the glossery and easily found the section that helped me get through it. I felt much better afterwards. Get this book if you are recovering. It will help!

    I am NOT BLPD:)

I appreciated this book as follow up of therapy I recieved, having had a horrible real incident in my life occur, and having, during the course of a Social Security evaluation been improperly diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder. It took me a year to get up the courage to admit that if I was just a mentally ill person not able to deal with the chaos I was imagining, or creating in my life, I better face it, and get a therapist who helped me deal with not only the real injury to my life, and the following complete disability that followed, taking EIGHT years to learn to walk and talk well enough to get a job way down from my experience and education, and ELEVEN more years to get back some type of life resembling my own life and career, with all the doctors saying 'you won't make it, you are too injured', but ALSO the horror of a 'therapist' who was kind enough to make me think I was not really injured, just making it up in some way. What a nightmare. Part of my therapy was to research the diagnosis and realize 'THAT is not me'.

This Book Is a Gift to the World

I discovered LOST IN THE MIRROR three weeks ago. For the first time in my life I am reading someone else's words about borderline and exclaiming, 'Yes, that is what I've had to deal with all these years!' Had I known about this book in 1998, I might not have overdosed for the third time. After seventeen years of therapy I now live a healthy life. Still, LOST IN THE MIRROR has things to teach me. Through it, I'm developing a deeper understanding of how and why I respond and react to intimate relationships with all-or-nothing thinking. I am learning about dissociation. To anyone living with borderline personality disorder, and their families and friends, please know that there is a way out. LOST IN THE MIRROR can help you find it. For anyone considering suicide, please know that help is available. I've taken my story and created HOW I STAYED ALIVE WHEN MY BRAIN WAS TRYING TO KILL ME: ONE PERSON'S GUIDE TO SUICIDE PREVENTION (also available at B&N).

    Excellent Update to the Original

I am the webowner of the Mental Health Sanctuary and was delighted to read the updated version of this book. This book was instrumental in helping me to understand my wife and myself as well, as the two of us have this disorder. As a nurse little was taught about this disorder other than they were ¿difficult¿. This should be required reading for any working within the mental health community. There is a special section for people involved with those who have the BPD. I was very glad to see the new edition come out, as I believe it will clear up a lot of misunderstandings about treating this disorder. Since his first edition, new information has come out regarding treatment and Dr. Moskovitz brings you up to date. Dr. Moskovitz brings up the importance of medication in treating the BPD, which many books do not touch on.

My Most Recommended Book For Borderlines

I myself have been diagnosed with the borderline personality disorder (BPD) and as a result have lived most of my life crisis-oriented; experiencing a great deal of emotional pain. I tried everything imaginable to get better and yet nothing worked. My family sat down with me for long periods of time trying to get through to me. I went to many different counselors looking for some way out of this nightmare that I lived. As I listened to everyone it was like they were on a different planet speaking a different language. No one could understand me. Finally I got a copy of Dr. Moskovitz's book 'Lost in the Mirror,' I sat down and cried shortly into the first chapter. It was the very first time that someone understood me and not only that, it was as if the author had his arm around me through the entire book. Lost in the Mirror is so beautifully and gently written and it was also the first time that I realized that I was not miserable because I was a bad person which is what I had always thought. The magic of 'Lost in the Mirror' is the mixture of the tremendous clinical experience and knowledge the author has (he is up to date with the research), with his very gentle, warm and caring personality. People come to me all the time asking what book I recommend for borderlines and 'Lost in the Mirror' is it. In fact, it is also an excellent book to assist families in understanding the borderline their lives. I have heard from many family members how helpful this book has been for them. Dr. Moskovitz brings you right up to date with his second edition in regards to treatment. He discusses the latest about psychotropic medication, EMDR and DBT. As the webmaster of BPD Sanctuary since 1996, a person who has studied the research myself, someone who has spoken to many BPD specialists, to many borderlines and families in cyberspace, and a consumer myself, this is my most recommended book for borderlines. It is important to know that the BPD is treatable and that you can get better. I no longer meet the criteria for the BPD.
