This is a great book. I bought it for my childcare's ocean unit. I have this book, some others, a flannel board, and some other ocean things. This book is good because it functions as both a book for a group read to kids and a book kids can have fun with looking at themselves at the reading and writing center. This book is very cute and it rhymes, which helps children develop reading skills they need. The book keeps children interested as they hunt for treasure, and look at the pop up illustrations (which are very large and easy to use). The kids love flipping through the book and seeing the pop ups by themselves. There are also words written for you to add sound effects when you read aloud, the kids love helping make those noises. There are a few negatives about this book, hence the five star rating. Some kids are a bit frightened by the scary sea creatures, especially the big squid and the king of the ocean. The other thing is that you never find the treasure, the last line talks about swimming away from the treasure, so I guess the ending is that they run away when they are scared. This does open the question, what else could you do? Which can spawn some pretty good class discussion. Overall a good book for kids who want to learn about ocean creatures and meet the oceans "monsters"Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
