Lottie's Cats

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-- Lottie's life is the stuff of which little girls' dreams are made. Not only does she have her own well-furnished playhouse in a lovely garden, but she can also play there any time she likes and even spend nights during the summer. To keep her company, she has seven cats, one for each day of the week, but it's Friday's cat, with fur as white as moonlight and eyes that glitter like stars, whom she loves best of all. Then, in mid-October, he vanishes. Lottie, her cats, and her mother search for days, and Lottie's sadness grows until Halloween. Then Lottie sees the cat returning from the skies on the broom of a gossamer-winged fairy. Martin's finely detailed illustrations capture perfectly the elements of romance and fantasy that Cecil embeds in the text, and provide much for readers to ponder and enjoy. Although the book will not attract a wide readership, its dreamlike quality will captivate imaginative children, especially cat lovers. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
