Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
It's easy to call Shannon Curfman the female equivalent of such hot-shot guitar-slingers as Johnny Lang, especially since Lang not only appears on her debut Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions, he co-wrote a few songs with her as well. And it is true that Curfman does play modern blues-rock that recalls Lang's, but it's not a direct copy, it's simply informed by the same influences. After all, Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions makes it clear that Curfman has her own voice, one that's a little bolder and gutsier than Lang's. Throughout the record, her singing is impassioned and playing is firey. She does take the occasional stumble, but that's usually because the material is...

That doesn't happen too often, though, and even when it does, it's not enough to make Loud Guitars anything less than a top-notch debut. [Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions was initially released as an independent album. It was re-released by Arista in September 1999 with a different cover and mix, along with some new songs.]

Amazing talent for someone so young...

It is truly amazing to listen to this CD and think that the person you are hearing was 13 at the time she recorded it. WOW... It is also nice to see someone who avoids the vapid comercialism so present in the music industry today. This CD works on many levels. I hear echos of Bonnie Raitt, Etta James, Shaun Murphy, the list goes on. Words really escape me...

I'm only 15, my dad bought me this album for my 14th birthday. then we went and saw shannon in concert. not only is she a great performer, she is one of the nicest people I have met off stage at a blues concert. overall this album is great!

    Young Singer/Guitarist Escapes Vapid Commercialization!

How refreshing. A musician, not a product. This talented young female opted to do her own music instead of apeing Britney, Christina or Mariah. No vocal acrobatics here, just her strong, smooth voice singing true. She plays and sings from the heart with an energy and depth missing from most music. How someone so young finds a place this deep to pull music from, I don't know. Some things are best just enjoyed for what they are. This girl Rocks!

14 Year Old Displays 35 Year Old Sophistication

I am extremely impressed with the depth of this young blues artist. She not only has a phenominal, throaty, dusky voice, but the feeling that wraps around her lyrics is mind boggling for such a young woman. You can hear the pain and suffering with every note.
