Overview

Is Catholicism more than giving up beer or chocolate for Lent?

Even if it's good beer or great chocolate the answer is a resounding "yes!" In fact, we're called to have such faith that when others meet us they actually see Christ. But how do we do that in a world where Notre Dame means "football" and not Our Lady?

By following the lead of so many before us…

We have living examples of holy men and women who overcame the same types of temptations we face and shortcomings we all have, to become "huge, blinking neon signs that pointed to Jesus." And if they can do it so can we…with a little practice.

Author, lecturer, and Catholic convert Matthew Leonard combines the stories of the saints' triumphs and struggles along with his own personal anecdotes and wry humor to show us all a fresh take on the art of being truly Catholic in a contemporary world.

Like a Hike in the Mountains and a Descent into the Grand Canyo

Like a Hike in the Mountains and a Descent into the Grand Canyon

This is a great read and it goes down smoothly! Mr. Leonard lays the groundwork in the first two chapters while allowing the reader to get used to his style--a unique combination of the sublime and the earthy, the serious and the comic!

Then he shifts into high gear along about Chapter 3 and takes you on a very wonderful ride. He grabbed me right away with St. Therese and evangelization! He has fascinating quotes and saints' stories throughout. He leads us deftly into core topics of suffering, sacrifice, and love; beauty, happiness, and heaven (better than Peter Kreeft!); the Eucharist and communion; scripture and prayer; and our final gift of divinization--all the while keeping it interesting and enjoyable.

When I was about half-way through, I realized was getting great "teaching," but it hadn't felt like it. Sort of like telling a kid he's about to get a geography lesson ("Oh, no! Is this for a test?") and then he finds himself driving up the Tyrolian valley and climbing an Austrian mountain or walking though the Painted Desert or the Grand Canyon!

You learn a lot but ¬it doesn't feel like school!
